    Yeah I did that this morning. I also saw the gasket crumpled up inside the middle section with the motor inverted. See photos above

    Now that I got the shifter I disengaged I can turn the bottom end all the way to the right and this is what I’m seeing

    O and I am not able to move the unit up and down at all without tightening the bolts and then loosening them and slowly prying the unit down. There is almost no play.

    I don't know how to check the compression. I'm not experienced. I am going to try the above advice. I did manage to get the shifter to disengage so the drive shaft is stuck up in there. I am posting a few more photos. There seems to be a rusty wire twisted up inside. Don't know if this is...

    I don’t thing the rod is not disconnected - Incidentally, when I shift to the gap doesn’t close - you can see the rod in the photo I’m attaching now - thanks for the advice.

    Hey Forum. I'm new here. I have a problem. My 1964 Evinrude Sportwin 9.5 outboard is overheating. I was advised (kindof new at this) to remove the lower end and inspect the water pump and impeller. But I can't seem to get it off. The motor was mostly used on lakes. I got the 4 bolts off...
