    My concern is , why did the alarm wire get hot enough to melt , that should not happen ,even if the alarm was ringing for a month . Bad ground , loose positive wire or undersized gauge wire comes to mind . So you just tapped up a potential spot for a fire to start . The wire has been compromised...

    Check , remove bolt that holds the wire on top of the sending unit ,clean wire and bolt that holds wire on top of the sending unit . That is a common issue with fuel gauges .
