1996 5.7L Vortec Timing Cover Question

I want to go to the Cloyes 9-3145 double roller timing chain and gears on this rebuild. The engine is a 1996 5.7L vortec with roller cam and block is an 880 block. I know the standard timing cover won't fit a double roller. This will be a Rochester Quadrajet setup with Thunderbolt IV ignition so...

Mercruiser Flywheel Housing and Coupler 1996 GM 5.7L

Does anyone know the correct Mercruiser part numbers for the flywheel housing and coupler for a 1996 GM 5.7L with Alpha One drive? What I have in my hand for parts is a 96119 housing and a triangle coupler but don't know if those are correct. I have seen the 96119, 865657A04, 12675A7, and...

    5.7L Vortec Part Recommendations

I have a heavy duty (4 bolt main) 5.7L Chev Vortec block (late 90's). I am looking for recommendations on parts to buy to build it up. It has a stock crank, cam and pistons as near as I can tell. I think this was a truck engine due to the 4 bolt main. I know all the arguments for and against...

    Mercruiser 260 Good Engine

Is a Mercruiser 260 from the mid 70's a good 350 engine to rebuild and convert to Vortec heads? Thanks...

Solid State Relays for Marine Use??

I am designing new switch panels for my restoration. I am thinking of using two relay powered circuits: 1) one for engine, nav lights, panel lights, docking and transom lights, wiper and VHF and, 2) one for cabin lights, courtesy lights, stereo, water pump, etc.. I am planning a fair mount of...

    Transom Questions

Now, back to the weep hole question for bonding the plywood to the hull. Here is what I plan in the yellow dots. Ideas, thoughts and/or comments please? Thanks...

    Transom Questions

    Also did some work on dry fit and made some clamping boards. Didn't get to the top clamp board yet. Here are a couple of pics;

    Transom Questions

Got some more work done over the weekend. Did a bunch more grinding to get the hull flat and the same thickness all over. It appears that the factory never clamped the plywood at the bottom of the transom sufficiently to get it flat. A lot of resin build up. Here are some pics of the grinding:

    Reference Points for Dimensions

As I am replacing the transom, stringers and floor, I want to make sure and get everything true and aligned. I may be over thinking this but how does everyone determine a reference point for all measurements. For example, do you run a straight edge across the gunwales and measure down to...

    Trim Tabs - Restoration

The boat I am restoring had hydraulic trim tabs (vintage late 70's early 80's). I am not sure if the pump was/is working since I bought this boat at auction. There appeared to be a little bit of leakage at the starboard trim tab cylinder but the pump had oil in it. I can bench test the pump...

    Epoxy Brands, Types, and Applications

I read the sticky on Fiberglass resins and that was very helpful but I am wondering about the various types and their applications. I have 4 different needs and wondering if one epoxy will do all or should I use different epoxy types for each type of job. Looking for recommendations for the...

    Tools - Fiberglass and Wood

I read through the safety sticky and it talks about safety equipment which is great. I was wondering if some of you could expand upon that with some recommendations and brands and models. For example, paint and resin requires respirators capable of handling VOC's but many of those you can buy...

    Stringer Design Question

Here is a pic from the port stern with only partial deconstruct when I was first starting. Fuel tank is still in it but I had pulled the plywood off the top of it. Including a couple of pics of the boat from outside just before I moved it from Colorado to Washington. In good enough shape to...

    Transom Questions

Thanks. I am going to a Mercruiser Alpha One and have a paper template for the cutout when the time comes. The concern right now is the thicker base of the OMC cutout versus the top of the OMC cutout and how to deal with that (if I need to). I am attaching a picture but it is hard to see the...

    Stringer Design Question

This is what I found when I opened up the floor to replace the transom. I cut the floor back about 8 inches away from the transom and cutout the floor and stringers. Here are the port and starboard cross sections of the floor and stringers. In the picture labeled stringers port A, I annotated...

Fuel Tank - Paint or Powder Coat

Not sure if this should be here or in engine section but here goes. I pulled the 60 gallon tank from my 76 SeaRay and although it looks in pretty good shape, I do see electrolysis started in a few areas. It has had old gas and sludge in it for many, many years. I bought this boat at auction so...

    Transom Questions

Finally got the boat moved to my shop in Washington state and getting a chance to move forward on restoration. I started the restoration work on the transom. The transom measures about 3 feet high and about 7 feet wide on the inside (more like 4 feet high on the outside) and I have pulled out...
