    Arghh! Freakin raccoon.

Unless that raccoon has a real good reason to come back (young ones?) .It probably will think twice before getting anywhere near the place where she does not feel welcome.

Need help: Bizarre Bravo III freshwater galvanic corrosion quandry

Very good advice, specially the the swim back to where you entered the water part. That way you swim a known gradual neutralising safe route back to dry land

Need help: Bizarre Bravo III freshwater galvanic corrosion quandry

That was my understanding as well, but it seems that different chemicals in the water, specially as the water gets warmer, tend to react with the aluminum alloy more than with the magnesium. That was the advice I was given by my local western Lake Ontario boat mechanic /small marina owner. He...

    Repainting a 1989 221V Starcraft Islander

I pulled my new to me Islander (one year) and in order to make it look nice again I decided to do a paint job. I just do not know exactly what type of paint and what shade of blue to use. Being color blind does not help. Also what type of white goes on the bottom when she is in a slip in fresh...

Need help: Bizarre Bravo III freshwater galvanic corrosion quandry

It seems that aluminum indium alloy anodes work better in the great lakes, specially during the warm summer months

    Flux Marine Outboard Engines . . .

I do sense a little of mistrust of new and potentially better systems of energy creation. Let's not forget that the only way to get alternatives to what we know is an energy source that pollutes and poisons is trial and error. I think that in 20 or 30 years from now, gasoline engines on boats...

    Add tilt/trim to 1978 Mercury 500 Thunderbolt 50HP 4967035

It is an outboard bracket that is attached to the transom just like the ones that are used for kickers, but this is also available with a tilt&trim setup

    Water in bilge

Are you sure that it is the boat? Maybe there is a leak in a cooling water hose or a loose connection. Anyway 2 gallons is not so terrible. It could just be condense water that forms on the bottom of the boat

    Add tilt/trim to 1978 Mercury 500 Thunderbolt 50HP 4967035

An alternative would be buying an outboard bracket that has tilt&trim. Just install it on your transom, and attach your outboard. no need to fiddle around with hydraulic oil pump, just attach it to a 12 volt source and you're done

    Moving my batteries forward

So I looked at how my Islander lays in the water when docked. The bow is fairly high up while the stern sits quite deep. This is because I have a 4.3 liter engine an outdrive, an extra long shaft Suzuki and 2 big fat batteries all on or near the stern. It raises the bow high enough to make the...

Who makes covers that are any good?

You can go to Target and buy a spray can of water proofing material for shoes . I use it once year. It does a great job. I usually put a big inflatable exercise ball the type that you can sit on(sometimes even two) on the bow section of my Islander so the cover does not lay flat on the bow. It...

1988 Johnson 70hp - VRO or not to VRO?

If anybody has any doubt left as to why Premixing is the better way to go... This might help: A lot of these VRO using engines blew up because people forgot to refill their oil oil tank, or the connections had an air hole sucking air instead of oil. There are simply too many things that can go...

1988 Johnson 70hp - VRO or not to VRO?

The outside of them look the same. They must have a model or serial number printed on them somewhere. Armed with that model # you should be able to find out what you have. The fact that your engine is still in one piece makes me think that you have the newer version.

1988 Johnson 70hp - VRO or not to VRO?

Unless the 1988 VRO unit was replaced by a newer version, it is still the type that pumps variable amounts of oil anywhere between 1:50 to 1:100 mixture dependent on the rpm. This has blown up a ton of engines. The later (post 1990) VRO is no longer a true VRO but an oil pump that provides a...
