    Water in oil

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/fel-ms901312/make/chevrolet I think this is what you need, there are marine head gaskets (hope you used those!) but I don't think the intake gaskets are marine specific, Fel Pro is one of the better brands, just be careful with the torque. I used their marine...

    Water in oil

Well when I did mine my cyl heads sealing surfaces were perfect because they were new reman units. My intake manifold was original, there was slight pitting on the water port area that I cleaned up but still I used some Permatex Aviation gasket sealer on the gasket in those spots. The pre-Vortec...

To fuel filter or not. 3.0

see my post on the 2 different pumps used on the 3.0. One had an integral filter (used by OMC and Merc) the other did not (used by Volvo Penta). The integral filter may, or may not be adequate for your conditions. If in a damp climate and forced to use E-10 fuel like we are, I would use a...

To fuel filter or not. 3.0

Correct and the only pump I have ever seen that used a built in filter was on the 3.0. None of the others to my knowledge had that built into their pumps. Probably because the marine pumps for the V6 & V8s were based on automotive pumps, that were modified for marine use so had to use the add...

To fuel filter or not. 3.0

With the same base engine Volvo Penta used a spin on canister filter. The confusion might be from the fact that older versions of the mechanical pump did have a smaller filter built in; the V6/V8s did not.

To fuel filter or not. 3.0

And you only need a 10 micron for EFI engines; for carbed 20 is fine. Don’t overthink this

To fuel filter or not. 3.0

If that’s the case the cause was probably not changing the oil. Look at the spec on some of those filters. A Racor flows 90 gallons per hour!

To fuel filter or not. 3.0

The standard 20 micron filter canister is not a considered a fine micron filter. They are referring to something like a 2 micron filter. Not a standard 20 micron for carbed engines.

    Water in oil

Yes that might be it. Might just have to change the gaskets and torque correctly.

    Cooling system question

You mean disconnect the hose leasing from the transom mount to the impeller housing? Yes water should come out of that hose, maybe not as strong as what’s going in but at leases steady stream.

Also the torque specs for the Vortec intake are much less than the pre Vortec; if the gaskets on the Vortec were torqued to the same spec as the pre Vortec they would probably leak; and if they leak at the water ports the water goes right into the cam valley & oil. Pre Vortec : 30 ft lbs Vortec...

Ok sounds like you replaced the block but used your original heads & intake, is that right? If so I’d have the heads & intake checked by a machine shop for cracks, corrosion etc.

To fuel filter or not. 3.0

Most canister filters are rated at like 60 gph a 3.0 is going to use like at most 10-15 gph I’d think.

Blowby through vent tube? Mercruiser 3.7

Right now the issue is how to deal with the shop so that you have a good outcome. My thought would be to ask them to do a leak down test so they themselves can see where the problem lies. While the solution is not an easy one that is what needs to be done….

Blowby through vent tube? Mercruiser 3.7

Agreed those plugs look very oil fouled, kind of like my 35 year old Briggs and Stratton 3.5 hp lawn mower!

5.0 swap to 5.7 what carb is the best

I noticed that the price of Holley carbs has really gone up, some are pushing 750-800 bucks. Looks like the Edelbrock 1409 is still out of stock from Edelbrock including remanufactured ones, but you can get the 1410, which is a 750 CFM carb, not sure if that's too much for a 5.7. The reman...

5.0 swap to 5.7 what carb is the best

Both the Holley & Edelbrock use an electric choke so no difference there. If you use the standard cast iron intake you need an adapter (spread bore manifold & square bore carb). You can use an Edelbrock 1409 or a Holley 4160.

5.0 swap to 5.7 what carb is the best

If you want to stick with a 2bbl you can go with a Holley 2100. However if I were doing it I’d get a 4 bbl manifold and use either a Holley or Edelbrock (on back order now). I actually prefer the Quadrajet 4bbl but good cores are hard to find. I happen to have a good original on my 1988 4.3 V6.

    Electric Fuel pump conversion

If you don’t get quick starts with a mechanical pump there is likely another problem. Unless you are starting an engine not run in months because then yes the fuel in the bowl can evaporate. The first start of the season my boat takes 3 crank overs to start (mechanical pump, Quadrajet carb), but...

    Electric Fuel pump conversion

Exactly! Mechanical pumps are long lived and basically trouble free! The S wire (start) on the solenoid (yellow/red) does not get power when you turn the ignition on, it only gets power when you turn the key to start. That should work for you because by the time the engine starts (when you...
