Advice on first extended trip with 14 footer/7.5

We have a place on a small lake up in Ontario, more east of Sault Ste. Marie than north. Our cabin is on the opposite side of the lake from the road/parking area, so every year, we have to lug our stuff a mile or so across the lake in a boat almost the same as yours. When I first started going...

Fibreglass boat floor replacement - do I need to use fiberglass?

I didn’t find plugging the foam pour-in holes and relief holes to bo all that arduous. frankly, the idea of trying to shave off the foam after pouring it at the perfect level so the deck will sit correctly sounds like much more of a pain in the butt.

Starting Mercruiser 350HP In/Out Board Engine after 4 years

Ok, just worried the engine wasn’t drained. Lowering the outdrive and letting it sit would not get the water out of the engine block; only pulling the drain plugs would accomplish that. yes the engine was drained before it was stored, that should be no problem.

Starting Mercruiser 350HP In/Out Board Engine after 4 years

Did you drain the water from the engine after the boat was last used? If not, you might have bigger problems, like a cracked engine block.

Famous last words! Seriously, though, it's looking good. You're getting close!

    Alpha1 Gen 2 Gimbal Bearing

A lot of members here who are really good at keeping up with maintenance like the greasable gimbal bearings. However, I have not heard of many problem with the sealed bearings. (Sealed bearings are used in all kinds of vehicles, so they're nothing new.) Personally, I'd go OEM.

Engine Bay Rebuild - Motor Mount Blocks??

My boat was repowered before I bought it, and whoever put in the engine (a 350 Mag replacing a 4.3), used shims under the front motor mounts. When I restored my boat, I didn't need to remove or rebuild those mounts, so I kept the shims. (I think the shims may be Starboard, but I'm not entirely...

Help identifying a boat that I picked up.

If you use wood and just properly store and maintain your boat, you can save a ton of money over using Coosa. Much of the problem with wood boats is how they're made and cared for; you can remedy both by building it better than it came from the factory, and by taking care of it to minimize...

    Restoring a 1990 Larson

The grinding was the worst part for me. Hope you get to the rebuilding part soon; that's when it gets fun!

    new transom cutout alpha one

I used a holesaw, but that really only works if you cut that part first. If you’ve already made the rest of the cut out, there is nothing for the holesaw to grab into.

Tongue weight, single axle vs tandem

On a number of F150 forums I visit, they will tell you the 10% rule for tomgue weights isn’t necessary due to a boat’s wind-slicing profile. Concensus there is 6-8% tongue weight for most boats. 10-15% is for flat-front travel trailers and such.

Buying a boat with a rebuilt sterndrive??

A rebuilt motor wouldn't scare me away, especially if you know (or can find out) which shop did the work. I would imagine rebuilding a 4.3 would not be a stretch for most shops.

    Proper Engine Oil Level

Mine is a mid-90s 350 Mag (a 5.7 essentially) and it takes 5.5 quarts. I wouldn't trust the SELOC manual for anything...

    Proper Engine Oil Level

I don't think, for any vehicle of mine I've ever serviced, that I got out the amount of oil that corresponded to the engine's supposed capacity. There's also the extraction method issue like alldodge mentions... sucking oil via the dipstick tube never seems to get everything out. Now, if you're...

Deck repair looks like might need new stringers and any other advice.

Pulling the drive and motor isn't very hard; I am not in any way a gearhead in any sense and I was able to do it. Just make sure you take lots of pictures and label everything you disconnect. It does help to have an extra set of hands when pulling the engine, but most everything else is easy to...

Deck repair looks like might need new stringers and any other advice.

That’s probably possible, but if sounds like much more work than making sure the hull is properly supported and then gutting it. I don’t know what everyone else thinks, but it looks to me like the steps you’ve taken so far should properly support your hull while you do your work. As for the...

    Restoring a 1990 Larson

I did exactly as you propose. I figure, if I have to cut and pull up the deck over the fuel tank, I can just glass it back in after I'm done. No worries about water intrusion, except via the deck plate.
