    67 Year Old Head Bolts

I agree, probably could have used more heat. I could not get it cherry red. I don't know if that's really possible with alum, is it? Did all I could do with my little torch which generally works well on steel. For welding I have a pretty decent wire feed. Guess it's worth a shot, but not...

    67 Year Old Head Bolts

One more thing. Maybe this is a contributing factor in why the bolts are seized up. The parting line between the head and motor has a lot of paint coming off. Does this indicate it got really hot maybe? Or just a sign of age? Seems odd to me.

Yes, the plug hole is stripped. While adjusting the carb it died and wouldn't start. I pulled the plugs and the one came out along with the threads from the head. Argh! I don't even know how that could happen. My attempt to put in a threaded sleeve didn't work, so now I'm stuck replacing the...

    67 Year Old Head Bolts

Got the replacement head cleaned up and ready to install. Gasket showed up a few hours ago. Found a NOS OMC gasket that retails for $42, on ebay for $13! Today smacked the bolt heads a few times with a drift pin and a ball peen and then soaked them with PBB. I can't imagine much if any making it...

    67 Year Old Head Bolts

Thanks for the prompt replies. I have both a 1/4" hex impact and a 1/2" pneumatic, but think maybe I'll try to work them loose by hand first after employing the loosening techniques already mentioned. I'm not really expecting trouble, but my personal life lessons have proven to me that there is...

    67 Year Old Head Bolts

Working on an old Sportwin 10. Any tips on getting them out? I'd really like to avoid snapping them.

Golden Jubilee Evi Sportwin 10 - Should I convert?

Been a little busy lately with other stuff, but tested for spark the other day and both cylinders have a weak spark. A little odd. How can both be strong one day and then both weak a few days later? Guess the flywheel is coming back off for a looksie.

Golden Jubilee Evi Sportwin 10 - Should I convert?

I'm thinking fuel because it has new coils and it's dead cold, not starting. I didn't know that about the condensers though. Thanks for the tip. Question: Could it be the fuel tank? There is gas in the filter and the bulb seems hard, but that's the only change from when it ran and when it...

Golden Jubilee Evi Sportwin 10 - Should I convert?

I know, right? My arm was getting sore. Replaced the rope and rewound the spring and it's working better now. Any thoughts on why it suddenly is dying on me? At first it was idling half-way decently. Pretty sure it's getting spark and fuel.

Golden Jubilee Evi Sportwin 10 - Should I convert?

Punch it? Could you elaborate a bit? I used the shortest insert but this kit had no installation tool. So I put Loctite on the insert and Never Seize on the plug threads. I've yet to try to remove it. I'm a bit worried though, because I tightened the assembly pretty good. More than I would for...

Golden Jubilee Evi Sportwin 10 - Should I convert?

I also bought a kit and yes it was pretty easy. Took me about a half hour, but I was being very cautious. Now I got another problem that is kicking my butt. I got it started and it ran pretty decent: While trying to dial in the jets it started sneezing. Eventually I ran out of adj with the...

Golden Jubilee Evi Sportwin 10 - Should I convert?

Thanks for the diagram. It'll come in handy if I end up pulling the head. Current thinking is that would really be asking for more trouble. I see 10 bolts. Bet at least one would snap after all these years. I ran across a guy, actually he seems to be pretty good with this kind of stuff who says...

    Critters in My Boat

I need to borrow some of your pets. We have the world's dumbest cat. If we let him out he probably couldn't find his way back. I miss our outdoor cats. Today I'm fighting a flock of birds who decided that newly seeded lawn areas are a buffet. I got bird shot too. Could prob take 'em all out...

Golden Jubilee Evi Sportwin 10 - Should I convert?

If it was larger and intended to hang onto it, I'd do it the correct way. A tank though very well may leak, need paint, maybe need treating inside. I'd need more than a few feet of hose, would need the bulb, some fittings. It's just a hella lot easier to use the single line tank I already got...

Golden Jubilee Evi Sportwin 10 - Should I convert?

One time I tapped out an oil pan on a Kawasaki when the plug stripped out. I used grease to catch the shavings. Guess this would be kind of like that? Think I'd rather remove the head if it's just a few bolts. Can I reuse the gasket? I looked for a pressure tank and found only one and I'd have...

Golden Jubilee Evi Sportwin 10 - Should I convert?

Is that easier and cheaper than replacing the head? Guess I'm going to need a new gasket if I pull the head? If I want to replace the head must it come off a similar vintage 10HP?

Golden Jubilee Evi Sportwin 10 - Should I convert?

Well she started up on the 4th pull. Not too bad. Seemed to run OK at first, then started sneezing. Tried to adj it out, but ran out of room on the knob. Took the linkage off so could adjust the actual jet and now it just doesn't want to idle no matter what and it seems down on power. After a...

    Critters in My Boat

Thanks for all the ideas! Some I've tried, some are questionable, like others stated. I've used mothballs to get coons out of my fireplace before I put a cap on it. Yet whatever is doing the damage tolerates them. My cuz used to swear by dryer sheets until one winter his Z28 got all messed up...

Done with the ignition. Got really good spark. As long as the pump does what it should she should start.

    Critters in My Boat

So a couple weeks ago, was wanting to get my Crestliner ready for the season. Threw back the cover and find the inside is damaged again. Seat munched on. Foam from the bilge all over the place. New bilge pump is now UNinstalled. Crap. Second year in a row. Funny, nothing messes with my tinnies...
