    help with 79 merc 80hp no spark

    i just purchased a 1979 merc 80 hp outboard s/n9208182 i cant get a spark from it there is no power to the solenoid when ign is on can this be the prob,but when holding in the crank position there is power please help as this is my first outboard,i am a mechanic but these are different from cars...
