No tach, how to set idle speed?

So being an older Chrysler that needs that 20 pole tach (I found one that still doesn't work), I don't know the idle speed so it's pretty hard to know what's going on. Is there any way to ballpark that it's idling at the right speed? Also, it runs differently with the cowl on or off (obviously...

    Impeller Change on Chrysler 55HP

Model 5591 Will Frank's instructions do or are there special steps? He mentions a Force motor I'm wondering if the gearcase setup is different.

Fun at 5.5 mph this weekend :)

So I finally took the boat out this season, was very excited when running up the throttle however my heart sank as soon as she started to stutter out. It starts up and runs fine and at idle, and also is pretty good up to about 5-6 mph, then it starts stuttering as if it's out of fuel. It will...

'69 55hp is messy in the water

I see some oily trails in the water while it runs in the barrel. Is it supposed to leak what appears to be unburned fuel?

Where do I flush Chrysler 55hp?

I'm not sure if it even works with this motor or not, but what kind of flusher fits this motor? I cannot really figure out where its sucking in the water from...

Chrysler 55 idles slower with cowl on

This might be by design, but the manual doesn't mention anything about having to adjust the idle speed and then check with the cowl on, but it does slow down a little. So what I did was adjust around that, it runs fine on the water, I'm pulling 26 knots which seems good for that boat so I know...

    Tachometer again

Since it seems I'll never get a normal tach to work with my outboard I was going to purchase a TinyTach, but want to make sure it'll work. Their website only has one listed for gas engines so this will work correct?

    1969 55HP Tachometer

I'm not sure if this had been answered yet but I've tried many times to get a tach that works and finally finding one with the right number of "poles" still gets a wrong reading. Was the answer "no" to finding one that works on this old motor? It's battery ignition with alt.

    Tower of Power

So I've narrowed down my idling problems to the tower's various adjustments. Idle is fairly smooth, but occasionally it "jumps", and I'm trying to figure that out. The Clymer's manual is basically useless as it doesn't have a picture that shows what these things are and how to adjust. I was...

    1969 55HP Orange wire?

This goes to a sensor on the block near the sparkplugs, and then into the wiring block on the motor, then down the wiring harness to the control box, and then nothing else. Is this supposed to be hooked up to something? I'm not certain what the wire does, others here talk about a buzzer that...

    Got lucky with the adjustments!

So here we are at last: http://www.comedy104.com/upload/chrysler/100_0365.MOV With the cowl on it starts and idles without stalling so I assume everything is ok?

    Ok, guess I'll give up...

My 1969 55hp Chrysler ran fine until I tried to tune it up and adjust the carb, now it runs like crap, misses constantly and won't idle (staller). The service manual is pretty vaugue and it doesn't have a photo of the motor with arrows on everything so I have no idea what I'm even adjusting...

    Lubrication of controls

I have the old cable-type steering, is there a certain kind of water-resistant lubricant to use on it? Also I want to lubricate the motor controls as well since they're getting sticky. thanks!

    1969 55HP Ignition parts

Model 5591 After seeing that one of the coils is cracked I decided to replace them both even though I don't think its causing a problem YET, don't want to have it die on the lake. It's been hinted at, but is this outboard just too old to find these parts for anymore?

New ignition switch: magneto-type, does it matter?

I found the perfect replacement switch for my 1969 55HP chrysler, except I hesitate to buy it because its marked as magneto type and my outboard is not...

    Video troubleshooting

Hey guys, It runs fairly decent with the cowl on now, but faster with it off. I posted the video also so you can listen and tell me if it needs any adjustments as well. The question I had about air was where does it come from? I assume the only air the motor gets is from whatever leaks in...

    Broke the ignition switch "holder?"

Hey guys, On the control for my 55hp 1969 the little plastic guy that fits around the keyswitch broke off and now I'm not sure what to do, buy a whole new keyswitch or is the plastic holder easier to find?

Where is a good place to buy parts?

Might be hard because this is an old outboard, 1969 Chrysler 55hp. I need lower unit seals/gaskets because it leaks gear lube into the water and vice versa, and also was going to replace the water pump/impeller while I'm in there, does iBoats marine store have the right items?

    20 pole? maybe not...

I bought the S.S. White HG502 tach: 0-8000 RPM 4-10-12-20 pole. I'm not sure what the right setting is for my 1969 55 HP because it seems awful low, the "barely running" RPM shows like 400, is this possible? I assume there's a way to figure out how many actual poles there are by the year...

    Cowl on causes stalling

OK, I had really good luck adjusting the carburator and figured out the mystery screw on the tower is for idle speed and in gear speed. However, I found out last night when I put the cowl cover on, it starts sputtering and dies which I think is lack of air. My question is, are there any air...
