Can someone tell me why the thermostat would blow out? My son was using boat and it quit. I checked it today and found the cover off the thermostat and parts in bottom of housing. What would cause this to happen?

I am looking at a used boat with a 50 horse evinrude. The seller has no idea what year the motor is. The model number is E50 TELESR and the serial number is G 02495733.
Anyone able to tell me what model year this is?
