Confused on the correct oil rating for air cooled outboards

I have read that I should be using a 2 stroke oil specifically for air cooled engines, as opposed to standard marine 2 stroke oil, but I am trying to figure out if the air cooled 2 stroke oil has a different designation-and what it is. I bought some "Penzoil premium plus 2 cycle synthetic...

OOps 2hp Elgin not fully cured, gas to oil? need help

OK, the little 1958? 2hp elgin that finally started running well was doing so on a 15 to 1 mix of Stihl Chainsaw Oil and our local regular gas with 10% ethanol. It was doing so well that I mixed gallon of gas with sears 2 stroke air cooled oil at 16 to 1. The sears oil might have been 10 years...

Elgin 2hp, can water cover the exhaust grid?

OK, after all the effort to get the 1958? elgin 2hp air/water cooled outboard to start, its now time to build some sort of engine mount on a coleman canoe for a river trip. This canoe does not have a transom, so I will build a mount to hang over the rear side, no problem. I can make the mount...

It Lives! 2HP Elgin cured and runs great!

Well, on the last pass I cleaned the carb again (did not need it) and pulled the stator cover, cleaned and sanded all connections, and pulled the original condenser and installed a condenser from a early 70's Honda CB750, which by way fits pretty good. Cranked on the second pull and ran great ...

wow it finally sprang to life after 22 years in the barn, but I still think it's running hot. Ok, thanks for all the help from the other thread. I got home today to fool with the Elgin a bit more, clean points and carb, fire at the plug and ....nothing. So then I took a syringe and injected a couple of CCs of gas mix in the plug hole, reinstalled the plug, and voila, its runs great...

Went to start Elgin 2hp after 20 years of sitting and..

...the recoil starter self destructed after about fifteen pulls. Fresh gas, fresh pug, clean carb, clean points, good spark, but not much action. A couple of hits , a little smoke, but nothing close to running. Compression felt good. Lots of gas sitting in the carb throat, but the plug was...
