hi all---weird Q here, but please tell me if it's been covered before and i'll search harder. i'm building a boat and trailer for fishing on the west coast of Baja California and similar rural areas of Mexico. Getting to some of the good spots involves mucho washboard dirt roads (try 100 miles...

    trim tabs on 18' hull?

hi all--started a new thread rather than burying it in my endless Holidaze because this info might be useful to others. my '64 Starchief has cast aluminum trim tabs that i've seen on a few other boats here, so i suspect they may be factory or at least a dealer option from when it was sold...

sliding vs folding rear doors---PROS AND CONS

i'm almost to the point where i'll be reinstalling the rear "slider" panels that close off the area under splashwell. i'm thinking about hinging em instead due to clearance and other issues. would love to hear input from anyone else who's made this decision, whichever way you ended up going...

Orca Bait returns to the Sea of Cortez; fish guffaw loudly

just got back from another week in Mexico, fishing out of San Carlos, Sonora. The Admiral had to work, so I was solo again. This was going to be another one of the “fishing death camp” expeditions, where we live lean and fish so hard no one wants to go along. Even took the last of the freezer...

    another safety reminder

not directly Starcraft related, but why you want to have positive flotation AND use good seamanship: A hooked marlin sinks a fishing boat? Well, something like that | GrindTV.com as Zack Thomas notes, it's amazing how big a wave a boat will take on the bow without flipping backward. it's even...

    model ID help

hi all-- i recently bought a Honda 10 hp twin. not sure of model # or production date but it has the white-blue shroud they used in mid 80s(?). serial # begins with "B100S" and i can't find any reference to a B100, so i'm assuming it;'s some version of BF10. anyone know a site where i might...

PITFALLS: things i wish i'd known before i started

along with the testing thread, this is another i've been meaning to start for some time as i suspect we've all learned something the hard way that we'll do differently on tinnies #3, 4, 5,.........and like that thread, all opinions are welcome.........so here goes: 1. go back a few hours after...

    Starmada Testing Laboratories

i suspect we're one of the biggest tinhead sites on the web and as such, have an obligation to develop some data for our bretheren and sisteren in tin. given all the discussion about various plywood options for floors n transoms, i decided to run the grand water intrusion/delamination test...

    what's under YOUR ribs?

here's what i found under mine. mild steel, stainless, brass, and aluminum. all but the last are higher on the galvanic table than your hull and will eventually cause it to corrode. luckily there were no lost copper pennies down there....Calder has a memorable picture in his book of a hole in...

changing bulb on Morse docking lights

my '65 Starcraft Holiday came with a set of the Morse in-bow docking lights installed. these use an "eyeball" like arrangement that can swivel in the mounting ring affixed to hull. i have the eyeball out (says Dr Lecter....) but can't figure out how to separate it to replace the bulb. it uses...

your bow cleat is your friend

your bow cleat keeps your anchor attached to your boat. anchors which aren't attached to the boat are notoriously ineffective. this is true whether the other end of the anchor rope has a bow cleat attched to it or not, if said bow cleat ain't attached to the boat. THIS (left side of pic) is...

anyone put the Moeller 25 gallon tank under the splashwell of an 18'?

i'm looking at fuel tanks. the usual replacement for the 18 gal Tempo tank that came under the splashwell of many 18' outboard SCs is Moeller #35927, which is about the same dimensions as the original: 18.25Lx36Wx7.25H Moeller also makes a 25 gallon tank, #39537, with similar dimensions...

    sound deadener under the bow?

a Q for those who have restored closed bow boats: on the 65 Holiday, SC used some sort of material between the oak bow-support ribs and the tin closed-bow skin, i assume for padding/support/sound deadening. it appears orig was some type of fiberboard. what have y'all used for this? i want to...

    cleaning out the fuel tanks

i need to clean out the tank on the starchief as it's probably got 10+ gals of nasty used-to-be-gas in it, and it's stinkin up the boat. 1. any ideas on whether i'll need to pull the tank out? it's a nicely built-in bow tank so it won't be easy. can i just hook up an electric automotive fuel...

    thoughts for Veterans' Day

one of my colleagues sent this around the office email....more eloquent than anything i could say so i thought i'd share it with my Starmada bretheren and sisteren. thanks to all of you who have served, and think about this next time you pass a homeless vet. or the next time your elected...

anyone have rough dimensions of Starchief cockpit?

bozo here is ready to order some Nautolex today but, ahem, forgot to measure the space he wants to cover. i think i recall about 60" floor width so i'd need the 72" wide instead of the 54"? and maybe order 3 yards? i'd like to get this off today to keep my {limited} momentum going. gracias!
