    I have a '78 Wellcraft V20 cuddy with a Mercruiser 898 and Alpha 1 gen 1 outdrive.     switch keeps melting?!?

    Is it rated at 24V? Are you sure you are actually pulling 24V and not 12V? You need to put a meter on the switch output to be sure. I'm thinking you will only get 12V and that means you are pulling more current to feed the motor causing heat and melted parts.
