Old motors DEMAND to be retired when they are 65 years old..

My '56 15HP Johnson retired a while back. Now all it does is go fishing with me once in a while...

1964 johnson 9.5 hp outboard prop

I have one of those. It uses the same prop as my 1958 10HP Evinrude. The Solas 2011-83-08P is supposed to fit. They can be found on eBay, Amazon, and here on iBoats for less than $100. The pin is part #0307949, and the prop nut is part #0305394. They also can be found on Amazon and eBay. The...

    1963 Evinrude won’t start

This is the one I got from Briggs & Stratton many, many years ago. I remember that it seemed pricey when I got it, but it's held up well and has proved to be invaluable over the years.

    1963 Evinrude won’t start

Air gap spark testers aren't rocket surgery, so even the cheap ones should work - if used correctly. All they are is two(or three) electrodes mounted in an insulator with a gap between them. One electrode is set to connect to the spark plug wire, and the other to the spark plug terminal, but...

Evinrude 9.5 how long until thermostat opens

I don't know how often it happens with outboards but if it were one of my old farm tractors, I'd suspect a head gasket leak between a cylinder and the water jacket. Or maybe a warped/damaged cylinder head. I've owned a 9.5 since 1984. It was given to me after I was looking to buy it, but started...

    Evinrude 9.5 1971 3 blade prop to 2 blade what’s the difference??

The number is correct, and it is the same listing I bought from over a year ago. I know the illustration doesn't show the notch for the drive pin, but the prop I received has one and fits perfectly. I know this listing has had more than one vendor, though. The first time I tried to buy one, it...

    Evinrude 9.5 1971 3 blade prop to 2 blade what’s the difference??

The supply situation in the U.S. is horrendous, for various reasons - high demand, labor shortages, etc. Could be the U.S. vendor is working with older stock, and when that runs out the next order from his supplier, if it ever shows up, will come with a dramatic price increase.

    Evinrude 9.5 1971 3 blade prop to 2 blade what’s the difference??

Interesting. I'm in the U.S. and I'm seeing a SOLAS prop on Amazon for $51.75 and free shipping.

    68 Johnson 9.5

I ran a '64 9.5 Johnson on a 14-foot tinny for many years, and I've had a '54 10hp on the same boat. The difference, as you say, is like night and day.

What year is this Evinrude Fastwin?

Pretty much, though things like the cowls and the associated mounting brackets are different. I have a '54 Johnson 10Hp, a '56 Johnson 15Hp, and a '58 Evinrude 10Hp. The cowls on the Johnsons flip open from the back, while the one on the Evinrude flips open from the side. That said, parts often...

    58 Evinrude 10HP spun prop

I'm on vacation, and yesterday spun the hub on the prop on my 58 10HP Evinrude. I was able to get up and going again by pulling the prop from my "spare" motor, a 64 Johnson 9.5. But, while I'm waiting for the wind to go back down so I can go fishing once more, I'm investigating my options for a...

    58 Sportwin shift linkage

While on a fishing trip to the St. Lawrence River last week, we discovered that the shift follower assembly had broken. This meant that sometimes it would shift into forward, but more often not. No idea when it happened, sometime in storage, I guess. Not having any other acceptable resources at...

    50's cowls

This is a photo of my boats docked at a fishing camp on the St. Lawrence River. The motor on the left is a '56 15HP Johnson, and the one on the right is a '58 10HP Evinrude. What strikes me is that to look at them, they look to be the same size. Did OMC use the same basic cowl for both sizes...

    10hp question

At a guess, all other things being equal (same boat, trim, load, etc.), which would likely be faster, a '54 10HP Johnson with a replacement 9x7 prop, or a '58 Evinrude 10HP with the original 8.25x8 prop? Just curious...

    Ignition coil longevity

I looked it up, and I was wrong about when I got the motor. It was in 1984, not 1985. So here are two pics, from different angles. A bit too close on one, so it's a bit fuzzy, but it will do the job. All I know for sure is that *I* haven't replaced those coils, ever. I was going to buy the...

    Ignition coil longevity

I have a '64 9.5 Johnson that I've owned since 1985. I was just doing my annual Inspection of the Points in anticipation of our annual fishing trip, when it struck me that in all that time I've never replaced the coils. I knew the original owner, dead now, and it's doubtful he ever did it, so...

Replacing steering friction pads on a 9.5 Johnson

I have a '64 9.5 Johnson that needs new pads on the steering friction. I have the pads. Is there a way to replace those pads without splitting open the clamshell and removing half of it? I've done that job before, more than once, and it's no fun. Have to admit, it doesn't look like there's any...

1955 FASTWIN 15 FUEL PUMP CONVERSION

I did a '56 Johnson 15, but I was lucky. I had a '58 Montgomery Ward 12HP Sea King parts motor with bypass covers all ready for a fuel pump, even though that parts motor had had the fuel tank on the top.
