Doing water pumps on 95 225 ocean pros for the 1st time. Any tips or suggestions?

i have 2 1996 225 ocean pro's that stall out everytime i put them in reverse. Boat runs great in forward. Anyone have any clues where to start?

Changing the water pumps for the 1st time on these engins. Should they be in gear when removing the lower units? Any tricks or tips i should know? Thanks
