Trim and Tilt Relays click but do not operate the motor

I have a 1981 115 hp Johnson that the trim and tilt began to be intermittent both ways then quit last time out and had to use manual release to trailer up the boat. Both relays click when pressing the switch, but the motor does not operate the trim either way. When I bypass the relays and put...

1981 115 Johnson charging voltage is 16 volts

Battery is 3 years old, clean, stored inside, kept on float charger over winter. What would you consider the highest yet safest voltage for a charge rate?

1981 115 Johnson charging voltage is 16 volts

16-17 volts seems a bit high, how do you test the voltage regulator that sits on top of the port side of the engine? Thanks for any help.

    1981 Johnson 115 voltage regulator

Will testing the yellow wires with the engine running from the alternator show a voltage going into the rectifier? What AC setting would be sufficient to pick up the out put from the stator (6 amp)? The stator ohms tested good and I now have a good rectifier but still do not have over 12.5 volts...

    1981 Johnson 115 voltage regulator

No offense taken. Yes, got reading on one wire only, even after reversing the the leads.

    1981 Johnson 115 voltage regulator

Testing them on the bench, can't believe two new ones would both be bad, but according to the manual they are. Put the first one on the engine and voltage was at 12.5 volts, checking at the battery, solenoid and bus bar. These parts must be made overseas as the price is very attractive, who...

    1981 Johnson 115 voltage regulator

Purchased two new 3 wire rectifiers from Pro Marine and when tested with an ohm meter, I get different readings on the wires which according to the OMC manual makes them defective. Are Pro Marine products such as rectifiers reliable components?

    1981 Johnson 115 voltage regulator

1981 115 voltage regulator, not sure how it works or what it is for. Will it affect the charging of the battery if it goes bad? How is this component tested to see if it is good? Does this act more as a resistor seeing as the purple wire is keyed power and yellow is on charging terminal. Thanks...

Johnson 1981 115 Top Bearing Replacement

That is what I was looking for, some advice on the best way to remove it and replace the cap so the O rings won't get gouged or cut on the way back in. Rigging up a puller seems like the only way to get a straight even pull without the side to side prying upward. Thanks for your suggestion...

Johnson 1981 115 Top Bearing Replacement

Any advice on removing it? That is a pretty tight fit and reinstalling without gouging the O rings might be a bit tricky?

Johnson 1981 115 Top Bearing Replacement

Correction!! Side movement is 1/16" not 3/16", had a senior moment when doing the original post, sorry about that. Still wondering if pulling the top bearing without splitting the case is possible.

Johnson 1981 115 Top Bearing Replacement

What other issues come to mind Racer?

Johnson 1981 115 Top Bearing Replacement

Has anyone ever replaced the top bearing on an early 80's OMC v-4 engine without splitting the case? Flywheel has approx. 3/16" side play when rocked by hand, just wondering if the bearing cap can be removed to replace the bearing and be reinstalled without splitting the case, anyone?

    Engine Running Hot

Engine was run in a barrel and the poppets still opened. Engine running around 140 degrees regardless, guess that will be the norm for this one, at least not overheating. Thanks for all the suggestions from everyone.

    Engine Running Hot

Deflectors are good, replaced them when the heads were off, looked like the originals.

    Engine Running Hot

Are the poppet valves supposed to open when the engine runs just above idle? Thought they opened when a higher RPM produces greater water pressure from the pump? Never known for them to open at a fast idle.

    Engine Running Hot

New water pump kit, Pro Marine thermo kit, running on flushers. Plenty of water gushing from heads without hoses attached to them. Will barrel run in a couple of days, but water supply shouldn't be the issue, more than enough coming from the heads. T-stats open up at 140 degrees in pan of hot...

    Engine Running Hot

1983 90 hp Johnson running hot @ 176 degrees at idle after new thermostats, gaskets, poppet valves and springs. Hoses disconnected from the heads shows more than enough water flow. Thermostats removed, cylinder head temps @ 100 degrees. Exhaust cover remains consistantly at 85 degrees with or...
