Raw water at carb at higher RPM

The crank case is not filling, no foam or inconsistent oil levels. Water is not in the fuel. It’s obviously coming in the breather hose. Thank you for all the ideas. My exhaust elbow looks to be in good shape, but maybe I’ll change as it has slight crack I can’t see or detect.

Raw water at carb at higher RPM

Mercruiser 470 - 1987 Renken 1750. Did a head job this summer for a faulty head gasket between 3 and 4, then found a crack in the head. Found a used head, machine shop worked it up, I installed it and it ran great! Ran great until on plane, and about 5 minutes it would begin to bog down...

    IDLING ISSUE ON A 470 / 3.7 MERCRUISER

Last season I began to notice a skip on idle in my 1987 Renken 1750 Limited with the 470 / 3.7. This spring I re-wired the motor and improved grounds trying to solve this problem. Under load, there does not seem to a problem. It is very smooth and powerful. The skip is also not rhythmic...

    electronic fuel pump

I have an 87 Renken 1750 and am thinking about installing an electronic fuel pump. Can anyone give me some pointers? What do I need to be aware of when looking for a pump and such.

    Pertronic Ignitor and Rotor question

I have a 1987 Renken with a 470. Just upgrade to a Pertronic Ignitor. When I put the magnet onto the shaft, it was seated as far down as possible. To me it seemed like the magnate did not leave enough room for the rotor to sit as far down as before. The engine started right up and died about...

    ah, the Almighty Weep Hole!

So, in May I did the cam seal repair on my 470 (S/N 779810) and was good with no leaking anti-freeze. I took the boat to a rental house and spent the week running the boat, about 2 tanks worth and now I have a steady drip from the weep hole. I noticed it drips once every 20 or 30 seconds when...

    The Spark Plug Story

Mercruiser 470 / 3.7 1985 - 1987 S/N 779810. I have had no running issues lately, but decided to change the cap, rotor, wires and plugs. (never did the wires since I owned the boat) Upon removing the plugs, which I changed the spring of 2011, I found them burning in this fashion: What story...

Mercruiser 470 Water Pump Seal Leak

Re: Mercruiser 470 Water Pump Seal Leak It looks like the seal farthest from the block is wearing fast or getting hot? I think it may be too tight and heating up, causing the seal to fail? I just did this repair too and "knock on wood" I'm in good shape so far.

    Weeping Anti-freeze

Re: Weeping Anti-freeze Here is the cam shaft end with 2 Readi-Sleeves. I got it all reassembled and headed for the lake. No LEAKS! Thanks for all your help....

    Weeping Anti-freeze

Re: Weeping Anti-freeze Well, I've got it all apart and have found the cam shaft is grooved. I have a Readi-Sleeve coming to repair that. Thanks for the help.

    Weeping Anti-freeze

I have a mid 80's 470 that has been a project for the last three years after being under a tree for 5 years. I have had it running twice this season and for the first minute or so, I have anti-freeze dripping from the weeping hole in the front of the motor. About on drop per second, then it...

    Shift Shaft Question

I have an Apha One S/N 0B700925 in my 1987 Renken, Mercruiser 470. When I replaced the impeller pump last season, I must have lost a washer (#50 in the diagram from the manual #6). Anyways, the upper shift shaft dropped down too far so that it would not engage with the shift cable shaft. My...

    470 charging options

At the end of last summer, my voltage regulator burned up - I know, big surprise. I have decided to retro-fit it with a altenator kit. I know that Breeseworks makes one, but are there other manufacturers, different styles, other options, etc? Just didn't want to jump into the most...

    How tight do you go?

I'm putting in my Sierra Impeller pump (complete Kit) and I'm unsure how tight to tighten to nuts on the pump? My SELOC manual says 25 ft lbs for the 7/16 nuts and 35 ft lbs for the 1/2 nut. I started tightening, tightening and my wrench didn't pop. The nuts are tight with a hand wrench, can...

    Sierra or Mallory

I'm going to purchase a new complete water pump kit in a few minutes for my alpha one from this site. Which is the preferred replacement brand - Sierra or Mallory? For both quality, completeness of parts and longevity. Thanks in advance

    Outdrive Install

Ok, new gimbal, all aligned with my new tool, putting the outdrive back in and it stops about 3/4 of an inch short? I have pulled it out, rechecked, I'm in the splines of the coupler, but it stops. It there something that is common to cause a hang up I'm just not seeing? Shift cable is...

    Coupler Concerns

Ok, gimbal gearing is in place, I have the alignment tool and it will only go into the coupler a quarter inch. It goes easy, then abruptly stops. Looking in I can see burs that is keeping keeping the tool out. What am I looking at for a coupler change? Does the engine need to come out...

    Alignment concerns

Second year owning this 1987 Mercruiser 470 and still learning. Alpha one is off, new gimbal bearing is installed. When I insert the alignment tool - it is hitting the outside and top of the splines - the tool will not enter the splines at all. I have taken the front engine adjustment up and...

    Steering Question

My 1987 Renken 1750 Limited has a steering issue. Trying to go straight at idle is difficult because the outdrive drifts from side to side. Everything is tight between the outside and inside the boat. When I move the outdrive, play can be observed in the steering cable itself - about a half...
