    Thru hull leak

Fair points, all. This is probably a death sentence, as I don't see a complete tear out and rebuild being cost effective. Thanks everyone for the input.

    Thru hull leak

Huh. Well, that's not awesome, but thanks. So - what if I just ... don't? Replace the thru hull and call it done? I assume there's some structural integrity issues?

    Thru hull leak

Thanks for the feedback everyone. The thru-hull isn't in the engine compartment - it's the head intake about midship, with a 6 inch round access panel. I don't see a way to attack it from the inside without literally gutting the entire cabin. That makes alldodge's drilling recommendation...

    Thru hull leak

I pulled my thru hull and valve because I noticed it was loose. Turns out it was allowing water in, and the wood between the hull and the bilge is rotted as far as I can get my finger in (quite damp, too, 3 months out of water, though I did run a fake-a-lake recently). I've got a fan going and...

No water draining from exhaust manifold

Hard to say. I've had the boat for 20 years - fairly sure I've never sucked up silt like that. Can't speak to the boat's first 10 years, though (and, like I said, I've never pulled this plug before, so I can't say it wasn't like that when I bought it). I'll have to check the manifold temps in...

No water draining from exhaust manifold

Geez - hopefully you didn't pull that just for the pic!! Thanks for the discussion and the advice. As for the blockage at the drain - should I worry about that, or just leave it be and drain as you suggest going forward?

No water draining from exhaust manifold

"The hose on the left going into the exhaust" - you mean the big hose at the top of the manifold? That won't drain anything? The problem drain plug is on the left, not the right. I can disconnect the water input hose (at the right, from the t-stat) - I thought that's what you were recommending?

No water draining from exhaust manifold

Apologies if I was unclear. The elbow in the pic - center bottom - is actually the fuel line going to the filter. Water enters the manifold on the right/fore side (through an elbow, but not really visible in the pic) - at a level just above the six mounting bolts. The drain is on the left/aft...

No water draining from exhaust manifold

I see. The logic being that the manifold will drain out either side?

No water draining from exhaust manifold

You're saying that blowing out the manifold from the t-stat - so only air is coming out the exhaust - is sufficient to expel all the liquid? Since the exhaust exits at the top of the manifold, it seems to me (NOT a mechanic!) that there would still be quite a bit of residual liquid in the lower...

No water draining from exhaust manifold

"Chunks" is over selling it. I get bits, a couple of grams at a time. I tried the compressor again - just blowing out the exhaust.

No water draining from exhaust manifold

I tried a little, but sort of half heartedly (I ran out of air and didn't have electricity nearby). I can try again (with electricity). Wouldn't the air just come out the exhaust though?

No water draining from exhaust manifold

Good Afternoon! I have a 1990 Volvo 5.7 (DP-A). While winterizing, I got no water to drain from the SB exhaust manifold. I got some wire (and zip ties, and nails) and have spend 2-3 hours trying to dislodge gunk. I can get the wire in about 3-4 inches, then I can't get it any further. I keep...

Power Steering high pressure hose coating flaking off

Thanks, much appreciated! dingbat, what makes you say the other hose looks bad? It's the return hose - I'd read that it was recommended to replace them both, but from the picture, it looks fine to my untrained eyes. dubs283, thanks for the local shop idea, I'll see what I can drum up. Is it...

Power Steering high pressure hose coating flaking off

I noticed the other day that the rubber/plastic coating on my PS high pressure hose is flaking off in several places. It's pretty brittle - I can peel it away in chunks. The braided tubing underneath looks fine, as do the connections at both ends. Is this something to worry about? Does the...

    Hydrolocked - now what??

Yep, no denying that if you can DIY, you'll save a bunch. Total labor on my $2500 was $1060 for 9 hours. I would totally work for 9 hours to save the money - and have, on this boat - but I just don't know what I'm doing enough to take the engine apart.

    Hydrolocked - now what??

As promised, posting the mechanic's findings for posterity. The heads on the port side were corroded, and the main gasket wasn't sealing properly, allowing water to enter the cylinder from the water jacket. It's unclear if the gasket went bad, allowing water in, causing the corrosion, or...

    Hydrolocked - now what??

Hey, Lou, I appreciate the detailed post. While it sounds like this is all something I could do, it goes beyond my comfort level. And at the end of the day, whatever I would find, I would still need to take it into the shop to get fixed. So I'm opting to just let them do the troubleshooting...

    Hydrolocked - now what??

Oil and PS fluid looks fine. Water again in cylinder #3. Skipped the compression test because I'd be taking it into the shop (a different shop) regardless of the readings to have someone who knows what they're doing figure this out. I'll post results here for posterity. Thanks for the input...
