Oil options for 1978 Johnson 85hp

I usually use the Johnson XD30 outboard 2 stroke oil for my 85hp Johnson engine but it's hard to find at short notice in Australia. My local mainstream fishing store has these options, are any suitable for my engine? Cheers

    Powerpack

A powerpack unit on my 1978 85 HP 85ETLR78C motor has failed. Can anyone point me to a replacement, preferably the cheapest unless there is a newer superior unit I should be looking at? cheers

    How heavy is the 85ETLR78C?

I can't find any specifications on the 85ETLR78C which tell me what the dry weight of the engine is. Does anyone know? Cheers

    Powerpack or timing fault?

I've got a 1978 85hp V4 and the right bank is not firing. Actually, every once in a while there is a spark but it mostly doesn't. Given it's both plugs on the right side and it occurred simultaneously I'm ruling out both coils suddenly failed and looking at the powerpack being at fault. However...

tilt/trim hydraulics are slow and sometimes stuck

I've got a 1978 Johnson 85 HP (85ETLR78C) which gets regular annual servicing by my marine mechanic. Last was only 6 months ago but it's developing a bit of an issue which I was wondering if anyone recognises? After the boat has been sitting for a few weeks it struggles to tilt all the way up...

Starting issues with Johnson 85hp 85ETLR78C

I've read the FAQ here on how to start my 1978 Johnson 85hp 85ETLR78C engine but I must say it continues to be a pain. People I've spoken with so far all say "that's an old 2 stroke for you" and the conversation stops. It's got about 200 hrs on the engine and I had it serviced 12 months ago...

Leaking water from engine, is it of concern?

Re: Leaking water from engine, is it of concern? I don't think it's normal boobie, I think it's a chip taken out of the casing which is allowing water to spill out. Take a look at this schematic, it looks like the gasket at the rear is complete and there is nothing idicating a portal for water...

Leaking water from engine, is it of concern?

I just noticed a stream of water coming from the gasket area on the rear of my engine when I'm running it with water from the hose. Looks like a chip has been taken out of the engine casing so the gasket isn't doing it's job properly. Take a look at the pictures, is this cause for concern...

Sending unit for 1978 Johnson 85

I've got a 85ETLR78C engine and the trim sending unit is dead. Are there any aftermarket options available to replace this? I think the OEM part is available but at $157.25 plus postage to Australia that's way too expensive. Ideas? links?

Johnson control won't shift to reverse

Re: Johnson control won't shift to reverse I have the older mechanical johnson single lever remote control. Which looks like this: I pulled it down and the teeth are worn on the plastic shift lever which is slipping off the cam: The part which I need replacing looks like this: Can anyone...

Johnson control won't shift to reverse

I've got a 1978 85hp Johnson outboard with the single lever remote control shift box. The warmup is a dedicated lever while the shifter has the lockout in neutral which you can ilift up to engage forwards or reverse. Today I shifted the throttle all the way fully forwards but as I pulled it back...

How does the choke work on 1978 Johnson 85 HP?

I've got a 1978 Johnson 85 HP (85ETLR78C) engine with a key start, the COLD START guide here says there are two basic types of fuel systems to aid in cold starting. Solenoid activated Choke plates and solenoid primers. I think my engine has the push key primer? From what I can work out this...

    1978 85hp Johnson - fuel filter?

My boat has a built in fuel tank and the plumbing goes to a fuel filter before connecting to the engine. The reserve tank which is just one of those portable cans doesn't have any external filter. Is it adviseable to keep the filter for the '78 Johnson 85hp outboard? Do they need to be replaced...

    How do I operate a 1978 Johnson 85hp 85ETLR78C

Way out here down the bottom of Australia I've inherited a beautifual 18' power boat with the Johnson 85hp 85ETLR78C outboard engine on it. Problem I have is that there is no owners manual. A quick scan of the internet and there are several US websites offering the hard copy of the manual but...
