    4.3 crankshaft/housing oil leak - next steps?

I read his I tracked Chris's pan problem and inspected mine for that problem. I have the cast aluminum pan and the fit was perfect. I guess I'll find out soon :)

    4.3 crankshaft/housing oil leak - next steps?

Found the culprit. 25 year old part. Not sure how this would happen, except potentially age. Cover and seal have even replaced. Pan was in excellent shape. internal components look virtually new.

Alpha One Gen II - bell housing bushing/seals - updated design?

never mind. While removing the seals, I found corrosion in the insides of the bushings. knocked them right out. Way easier than inexpected.

Alpha One Gen II - bell housing bushing/seals - updated design?

Perfect. Thank you! Now the more important question - should I replace the bushings, or just the seals? There is no "slop" in the shift shaft. The seal definitely needs to be replaced. I suppose it is possible that the worn, corroded, and hardened seal could be preventing "slop", but I...

Alpha One Gen II - bell housing bushing/seals - updated design?

I ordered replacement bushing/seals kit for my A1G2 drive - part 23-806036A1, which I found in multiple parts diagrams. I've seen a number of videos explaining that the upper bushing/seals were poorly designed and has been replaced with part: 805041A2 (with the extended seals housing)...

    4.3 crankshaft/housing oil leak - next steps?

I'm gonna try :) I've got a new cover w/seal and gasket on the way. if replacing seal works, great. If not, then replacing cover. Will also inspect pan carefully for corrosion, but seems wise to leave it alone if it's not the problem.

    4.3 crankshaft/housing oil leak - next steps?

I was surprised at how easy it was to pull the motor. All of the connections are pretty obvious, and it only took a couple hours to document where things go and how they're attached. I've replaced or serviced virtually all of the connections already, so it was pretty simple. The challenge...

engine is already out. New timing cover and pan gasket on the way. I will try to pull the seal and consider replacing first, otherwise the cover will be replaced. thanks

    4.3 crankshaft/housing oil leak - next steps?

Yes - I use that all the time. It's bookmarked and has been my primary source of info. And, Thank you! I was just trying to relate it to the factory and component spec's that Scott had in his doc.

    4.3 crankshaft/housing oil leak - next steps?

According to inherited paperwork, have a "Reman Plus Series" reman engine. It was installed in spring 2004 with a new carb, ign, and fuel pump. Quicksilver repower: SN: 90004747 Engine PartNo: 807736R11 date: 03252004 I generally use parts listed under: "MerCruiser 4.3L (Gen+) (4Barrel) Reman"...

    4.3 crankshaft/housing oil leak - next steps?

This type of info seems like it's worthy of sticky notes. I mean, I don't want to put the poor marine parts vendors out of business, but I also don't think it's fair to have unnecessary 5x markups on parts. Would be awesome for one of the site experts to detail comparative auto/marine...

    4.3 crankshaft/housing oil leak - next steps?

thanks for all the info! the Mercury timing cover was $279. Amazing if these are interchangeable. for $45, I would replace the cover, which I believe means removing the oil pan cover as well. Is there a way to match my REMAN serial number with that year engine, or does it just go by year?

    4.3 crankshaft/housing oil leak - next steps?

My motor is at my buddy's shop. he's got the tools to do this, I just don't know if others have replaced theirs with a non-mercruiser or non-marine seal. have you done this yourself for a marine engine? also, the cover is plastic. Would I be able to seat a new seal on a plastic cover, or...

    4.3 crankshaft/housing oil leak - next steps?

According to the Mercruiser Manual #25, there is a procedure and tool for replacing the seal without removing the cover "Oil Seal Replacement (Without Removing Front Cover)", however, the seal is not available without the cover. To replace the cover, you have to remove the pan. Has anyone...

Alpha 1 Gen 2 - leak & transom service questions

Was suggested to protect the transom opening with fiberglass and silicone the stud holes... to minimize chance of rot with any future leak. tested with moisture meter and appears consistent near and far from opening. Picked up supplies yesterday and will hit it this weekend. All seals...

Alpha 1 Gen 2 - leak & transom service questions

Anyone have experience removing studs from the transom bracket? These are factory installed > 25 years ago. I don't want to risk breaking the housing, if not critically necessary. to be clear, there does not appear to the a stud integrity issue (especially when the torque is only 23ft/lb), and...

Alpha 1 Gen 2 - leak & transom service questions

nope. Wood is fine. Had it checked out. its dry and solid. Shop agreed that a new seal is *by far* the right approach.

Alpha 1 Gen 2 - leak & transom service questions

Happy to report that they agreed with my assessment. Transom appears dry and solid. I will do a torque test with some plywood and bolts to make sure the torque holds, but a transom rebuild is not warranted. thanks to all who contributed! Couple questions: 1) I broke off the continuity...

Alpha 1 Gen 2 - leak & transom service questions

Big UPDATE: It's out. It's all out. The power steering and the transom assembly have been removed. the CULPRIT: The exterior gimble housing seal was toast. that's clearly where the leak came in. The rubber was brittle, broken and flat against the transom assembly. effectively, ZERO...
