    Lower unit noise investigation

The driveshaft bearings on a lot of Merc gearcases are cone shaped. The cones can face up or down. Some that face down have a spring and pin on the top end of the driveshaft to push them down into the race. Some that face up rely on hydraulic pressure to push them into the race above. Since...

    modified leaning post? Bolster?

Joe, Captain's chairs often have flip up cushions, just for the reason you want one. You might take a look at them and see how they work. Alternatively, simply install two of them replacing your current seat.

    modified leaning post? Bolster?

Do you want the bolster behind your back or a cushion under your butt? Either way, make or buy the bolster (or cushion) and use some vinyl straps, and some snaps to hold it in place. Folded and sewed strips of vinyl fabric are pretty strong. Sew them to the bolster or cushion and install...

    Replacing Motor mounts

Gee, which motor is that? I have replaced the upper motor mounts on my mercury OB, but not on my Johnny. On the Merc, the upper motor mount is sandwiched between the exhaust extension under the powerhead and the midsection. You need to pull the powerhead, and then remove some small bolts...

    35hp merc. Carb spring hookup?

That spring looks to be bent. If I remember correctly, on my IL6 with the same carbs, the small straight tip should go into the carb shutter, and the loop end should go around a screw which is missing, in the hole at the base of the throat. The screw also held on the plastic grating. See...

    Johnson GT Ocean Pro

J10 indicates Johnson 10HP. The rest of the letters give production run and year. The year is 2000, according to the crowleymarine site.

    One last try

A disk is child's play. I watched a guy get up deepwater on a slalom ski and a canoe paddle. He dropped the ski and skied on the canoe paddle.

    waterlogged foam in bowrider

Gee, gel coat is just thickened poly resin. It is as waterproof as any other poly resin, plus it usually has cloth to help with waterproofing. Chips in gelcoat do not usually cause leaks. It takes more than that.

    waterlogged foam in bowrider

Gee, if foam is wet, it needs to come out, and be replaced with dry foam. Of course, that means cutting out enough of the deck to dig out the wet stuff. You may find that more of the foam is wet (likely all of it), so when cutting out the deck, plan to cut it all out, and maybe you will not...

25 HP Yamaha 4 stroke backfire

Gee, is the timing correct? Does it advance when the throttle advances? The major difference when switching from working on a 2cycle motor to a 4 cycle motor is that the 4 cycle engine fires every 2 revolutions. i.e. After working on my 2 cycle outboards, I had a spark failure on my...

    One last try

OK, I skied behind a 3.9HP Merc on a rowboat, on a picnic table top. It was more like surfing.

1978 50hp Mercury timing and synchronization

There is always an adjustment for idle pickup timing. You will be able to vary the timing when the carbs start to open.

    Power Trim (70s Model 1)

The left most image is how my '77 Merc 1500 was wired. I do not remember a fuse in the circuit. The terminal block is used just so the PTT motor wiring can be removed, for PTT motor repair. Switched (primary) power to the solenoid is less than 5A. Power to the down circuit is direct from...

Silliest Question on Fuel Mix - Thank you for your patience

Gee, oil threads are real fun. Johnnyrude put out a notice that motors before 1964 needed 24::1 oil mix, everything after needed 50::1 oil mix. And this was in the 60's. Just saying.

Source for bearing buddies rubber plug

Jeff, you seem to say that a bearing cannot be checked for proper operation, unless it is pulled and repacked? Did I get that correct? I am not sure what you do, but after packing and installing a bearing, I check for play and binding. If you cannot adjust the nut on the spindle to a...

Gee, Jeff, I know how to check a bearing. No play, no bind, right?

Source for bearing buddies rubber plug

Gee, Jeff, I disagree with your last statement. 30+ years ago I moved to the water. I use the trailers 2x a year, which I would think is low usage. In those 30+ years, I pumped grease into the bearing buddy and other zerc type hubs hubs in the spring and fall, after launch and recovery. I...
