    Gas can & line

I just ordered a new Merc 20 to replace my old 1971 Evinrude. Will I be able to use my old gas can? If so, do I need a new fitting to connect at the motor end?

    Engine part ID

Thanks Racerone. The motor was running great when I put it into storage (outside under a tarp, if that's relevant) last fall. Does that help suggest what the problem is liable to be? It's no spark at either plug. Also, mice did get into the motor, but I have not noted any visible damage.

    Engine part ID

Can anyone please tell me what this rubber boot-like part is in the front part of my 1971 Evinrude Twin Ski 40 is? After getting it out of winter storage, I am not able yet to start the motor, and am wondering if this might be the reason. As you might be able to see, it looks like a sort of...

    2-cycle gas

I've got some gas with 50:1 2-cycle oil. It's about a year old now. Although it has Stabil in it, I'd like to burn it up and get some new gas just to be on the safe side. Is it ok to burn that up in my modern car?

    Intermittent Starter

I just got out my 1971 Evinrude Twin Ski 40. It was stored under tarp in the yard for the winter. The electric starter initially did not do anything. Did not turn over at all. Finally for some reason it did work. Then it worked intermittently. Sometimes it repeatedly would not turn over; but...

    Draining gas cans

At the end of the year I like to drain all the gas from my gas cans so the gas is fresh when I fill it next year. (I use Stabil, but still like to do this.) Is there a good way to get it all out of the old 5-gallon tanks that came with Evinrude motors during the 1970's? Mine has a ring around...

    Running motor out of water

A couple questions about running my 1970's era outboard--(I forgot to run the gas out of it). Will running it out of water just long enough to run the carburetor dry hurt it? Is running one out if water harmful even if you keep it in neutral?

Put water in boat on trailer?

Yes, I did check everything quite thoroughly, and did not get any leaking. This boat is a real mystery--what goes on under the plywood floor. Maybe it's just that whatever water does get in, by rainfall or whatever, gets trapped in certain pockets; then subsequently finds its way to the back...

    Leaking drain plug

My boat seemed to be taking on a bit of water, so I replaced the drain plug. Got one that had good reviews-- https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B005F09MF4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 However, when I got it and put it in, I found that when I put some water in the boat while...

Put water in boat on trailer?

Ok, so it's kind of funny. When I put water in, certain rivets on the bottom appeared to be slow-leaking. However, the hose water was of course cold and it was a warm day, so there was a thin layer of condensation on all the aluminum surfaces where the water was on the inside. So I waited til...

Put water in boat on trailer?

Thnx Lecto. I will mess around w/ this along these lines. Will let you know how it goes...

Put water in boat on trailer?

It's just plywood that rests on its perimeter against the hull. Below that is styrofoam. I don't think there is anything that will be hurt by this.

Put water in boat on trailer?

There is a cut-out in the floor by the drain plug, where you can see all the way down to the aluminum bottom. Sometimes when I take the boat out, an inch or 2 of water appears there. Also, when I leave it floating at dock. I really don't think it's spray, etc.. Seems to happen even under calm...

Put water in boat on trailer?

Thanks KJM, but this little boat has a plywood floor, seats, etc.. You can't see to do what you suggest. I took it all apart & replaced needed items last year and it was a tricky job I don't want to do again.

Put water in boat on trailer?

My 1970's-vintage 14-foot aluminum boat seems to have a small leak. I have applied Gluvit sealer to all seams and rivets on the outside of the boat, and don't know where it might be leaking. Can I put water in the boat (on its trailer) to see where it comes out? I would not have to fill it, but...

    Stuck pinion drive gears

Yes, the tops of the teeth sometimes get stuck together rather than pinion teeth meshing into the valleys of the flywheel. Actually, the flywheel teeth all look pretty good. The pinion gear is a bit more worn (as seen in the photo). I bought that pinion gear last year because the old one was...

    Stuck pinion drive gears

I think the crux of the matter is that the pinion gets jammed against the flywheel, tooth-to-tooth, so nothing can move until I knock it down with a hammer and a big bolt.

    Stuck pinion drive gears

Thnx F_R, but mine comes up and engages the flywheel when you turn the key. Then it's supposed to fall back down. But it sometimes becomes jammed, tooth against tooth with the flywheel, and does not go back down. Then when you turn the key to start it, nothing happens. You have to force it down...

    Stuck pinion drive gears

The pinion drive gear (starter gear) on my 1971 Evinrude 40 has a bad habit of occasionally getting stuck and not retracting because the gears get stuck together rather than meshing properly (See photo; you can't quite see it, but the teeth are stuck, tooth against tooth). I then take a bolt...

    Missing clips

The high-speed adjustment knob on my Evinrude Twin Ski 40 (1971; Model 40153B; Serial J01292) has somehow fallen off, along with the linkage rod that connects it to the motor. The shaft on the knob has a groove around it that looks like it should take a clip to hold it in place. Likewise, the...
