Smoking Engine and Mercruiser ignition switch question

Thanks. I can barely get my arm under there. A previous poster made the excellent suggestion to remove Some of the panel that surrounds the engine. Will do that.

Thanks. Any advice on how to access the plug or the starter? There is literally No room. I’ll need to remove the exhaust risers?

Smoking Engine and Mercruiser ignition switch question

Also I found all 5 drain plugs. 4 came out. One broke- the wings on the plastic plug broke off. I can’t see and barely can feel the plug. Any advice on how to remove the plug? Port side block plug. Thanks.

Smoking Engine and Mercruiser ignition switch question

Wanted to circle back up with everyone. The theory that the ignition got stuck “on” is likely correct. I put in a new ignition and when I turn the key, which now catches (the old one stopped catching while I was winterizing) the starter just clicks. Does that mean the starter is likely burned...

Smoking Engine and Mercruiser ignition switch question

Thanks. I’ll investigate the starter. I thought it was the ignition that went bad because it just spins. I’ve ordered a new one and will replace it and report back. The smoke was coming from the starboard side. It was running fine then just petered out. When I turn the key, it just spins around...

Smoking Engine and Mercruiser ignition switch question

Ah. That helps. Thank you. The ignition switch broke at the same time oddly enough. I’ll replace that then winterize. What will tell me the impeller is fried? I had great water flow the entire time and the over heating buzzer never went off.

Smoking Engine and Mercruiser ignition switch question

appreciate the response; I've been using the kit to get the AF through the engine for 14 years, and never had an issue. I had the boat mechanic tell me it was a stainless impeller, but can check that as well. Will check out the link above, thanks.

thanks- I was trying to warm up the engine enough to open the thermostats for winterization. Any other tips on getting it hot on muffs?

Smoking Engine and Mercruiser ignition switch question

1999 210 SunDeck, Mercruiser 5.0L 220hp, Alpha One stern drive. The impeller is stainless steel, so the rubber wasn't that. I had full water flow; I keep an eye on that and never heard the warning buzzer. the hoses, etc., all look fine. For the first time, I used this gas additive; maybe...

Smoking Engine and Mercruiser ignition switch question

Hi all- I was winterizing my boat, and, as I was warming the engine up (with the muffs on), about 20 minutes in, the engine starting to smoke a bit- smelt like burnt rubber. The engine stopped by itself, and after a close inspection of the engine (I could not see what was smoking) I tried to...

    Outboard lifter was struggling.

Wanted to circle back up here. After de winterizing the boat last week the rams continue to struggle. The switch doesn’t work right away and when it does, the rams really struggle. I have to lower the trim all the way to raise it at all. Getting two replacement rams and will swap them in next...

Trailer bearings wear out ultra quickly.

I wanted to circle back. It’s time for new axles and am ordering them from Eastern Marine (thanks!). Best to do this with the boat off the trailer I presume? Also, is it as easy as bending off the old u bolts and bolting new axles to the leaf springs? The springs are only 2 years old, so I...

    Outboard lifter was struggling.

Today I noticed one of my lifters seemed to be struggling so I took off the anode and saw a few metal seals on the shaft that were slowing the shaft down. Do I need to worry about these? Do I need to replace them? Pictures below. Boat is used in saltwater. Thanks.

Mini split outdoor condenser rodent guard advice

Thought I’d close the loop here. Spent last weekend building my cage. Not the prettiest thing, however it is behind the garage and no one sees it and I’d rather not replace it again. I drove four studs into the brick for easy removal for service. If I did it again, I think I would have designed...

    Gambrel roof- cubby

Our house is a 2 story, with a gambrel roof. What I want to do is cut a small cubby into the empty space in the gambrel roof “dead space” to create an area for the cat box. I believe there is dead space on the second floor between the interior wall and the exterior roof from the second floor to...

Mini split outdoor condenser rodent guard advice

Thanks guys. Fair point on the little guys getting through anything. It’s mounted a foot off the ground and they got it. I was going to put poison down but we have hawks and I don’t want to poison the hawks if they eat a poisoned mouse. A cage will be a paid to build but I’ll get some real tight...

Mini split outdoor condenser rodent guard advice

Hello all. I have a wall mounted outdoor condenser for my Cooper hunter mini split unit. Mounted last year. Picture below as a reference. The mice got in, destroyed it and now I need to replace it. Not wanting to experience that ever again, I’m going to build a cage to go over it with easy to...

    Lower unit lifter. Solenoid?

I wanted to circle back here. When wintering the boat yesterday, I noticed that the only way to lower the lower unit was to press the down button on the throttle. The only way to lift it was to use the “trailer” button on the throttle. The “up” part of the lift/lower button on the throttle...

How to build a front middle cushion support

Hey everyone. Could use some creativity here. On my 2000 searay sundeck 210, there is a cushion that goes in the fron to make one continuous “bed”. My boat didn’t come with the support for the cushion, just the cushion. I can’t find a replacement online. So I built one. It last until this year...
