Question about 90 amp fuse on starter

I guess I was wondering too if it is truly the case that they used to not have it at all and if it was added in later production if there really was an issue or more to keep the legal department or coast guard happy.

Question about 90 amp fuse on starter

Well using that line of thought then car insurance, medical insurance and a breaker box in my house might all be a waste of money too.

Question about 90 amp fuse on starter

I have an old 1987 3.0 alpha one with breaker point ignition. There is no 90 amp fuse on the starter. The parts book shows the fuse, however the wiring diagram from Mercruiser shows nothing of it at all. I understand it will protect the orange wire between the starter and alternator and the...

    Steering cable locking nut?

It's around $20 to buy one. Doesn't come with a new Teleflex cable but since it was shown in my manual I was curious. If you look online for old Quicksilver cables the nuts on them look like the nut shown in the instructions that alldodge posted above.

    Steering cable locking nut?

I was just curious. Looks like it is an older style of steering cable and not used on modern cables best I can tell. The manual shown above looks like it's quite old. My number 6 manual shows it in the parts drawing but doesn't really address it and if you look at the alpha one parts list...

    Steering cable locking nut?

I can't find much information about this so thought I'd ask. I am replacing the steering cable on my old Alpha One Gen 1. My Service manual Number 6 shows this apparatus on the steering cable where it attaches to the steering tube. My old cable didn't have this and I found only one reference...

    Outdrive leak question

What's not? Explain please. I thought it rather inappropriate for someone to post I'd be dead from the outdrive exploding by performing a pressure test per instructions in the mercury service manual that can also be found on this website.

    Outdrive leak question

What I actually used was a hand operated bicycle pump. I hope the shrapnel from the 15 psi bomb doesn't take my head off.

    Outdrive leak question

I did a pressure test on my Alpha One Gen 1 a year ago after installing a new input yoke and seal and a water pump. Held pressure for 36 hours until I finally just let it out. Ran it last summer and in the fall changed oil and put the outdrive on a stand in my outbuilding. No evidence of any...

    Lower unit repair and identification

It matters if the aftermarket is junk. Are they reliable? I hear both ways.

    Lower unit repair and identification

Alpha One Gen One 3.0. Lower unit apparently hit something on the lower part toward the front and got cracked and previous owner did a cobbled repair. However, never leaked oil and after doing input shaft seal repair a year ago I pressure tested outdrive and it held 12 psi for 36 hours until...

    Driveshaft Gear Rotational Torque

Yes....if you look at reassembly procedures for something like old tractor transmissions and differentials ( I'm not familiar with modern ones...I'm familiar with stuff made from the 40s to the 70s) you see tolling torque specs all over.

    Driveshaft Gear Rotational Torque

I know this thread is a couple months old but I just wanted to comment. I put a new input shaft and seal in my outdrive last winter. I read about this procedure and while easy to understand seems it would be tedious to perform and easy to make mistakes. I'm glad my gen 1 is old enough that...

Proper adjustment of bunks and keel rollers.

I have a relatively new to me 17' bowrider and recently noticed that when on the trailer that the boat doesnt touch the keel rollers. Shouldn't the boat at least touch them on the trailer? There is no means to adjust the rollers or bunks up and down. Rollers attach to brackets welded to frame...

    Good brakes on the truck.

Saw this making the rounds. Maybe has been here before. Have to try to attach a little more securely next time. Probably said....we're only going a mile..I dont need to tie it down.

    My little project

I bought this old 1988 17' open bow last summer cheap just to have a little fun with the family a few weekends a year. The interior was nice and overall in decent shape. I could see a lot of maintenance needed to be done but I enjoy learning new things and doing repairs and am half way...
