Crank driven vs block mounted raw water pump pros/cons

Experience is definitely a big plus. That capacity ratio is just what I needed to know, thanks! Definitely don't want an udersized exp tank.. Imagine it would boil over and/or blow a line or something pretty quick. Slightly oversized a bad thing? I have plenty of room. I am planning to run a...

Crank driven vs block mounted raw water pump pros/cons

Haven't decided where to mount it yet but good to know that on the wall is a good option. I do prefer keeping the motor as uncluttered as possible so mounting coolant res on the bulkhead would be sweet.

Crank driven vs block mounted raw water pump pros/cons

Anyone here plumb in a separate expansion tank before? My heat exchanger is very simple and does not have one built in. Prob have to make it myself so I have a rad cap and an overflow tank. Never seen one before so hoping to find a pic of a setup like that to emulate.

Crank driven vs block mounted raw water pump pros/cons

This shows the space I'm working with. The area in front of it is an empty cargo hold.

Crank driven vs block mounted raw water pump pros/cons

Awesome, thanks for the input all, and the flow diagram. The pump rotation being compatible either way is nice, I think I will order one of those when I get paid. The anti rotaion bracket should be simple enough to make and I'lldefinitelybe making one of those. Wish I measured the space between...

Crank driven vs block mounted raw water pump pros/cons

Kind of lost trying to figure raw water pump output needed for it. I was looking at a Johnson F6B-9.

Crank driven vs block mounted raw water pump pros/cons

Strainer- Yes, was waiting to figure pump size first and then get a nice strainer for the intake plumbing. My boat will be in the shallows a lot and def around plenty of seaweed. I was looking at some dif sizes at the local marine consignment. Drive impeller- yes, after some input from Scott on...

Crank driven vs block mounted raw water pump pros/cons

I was thinking it looks pretty weird to not have some sort of bracket... I'll definitely add one.

Crank driven vs block mounted raw water pump pros/cons

So, out of the crank pump users- do you use a stabilizer bracket? I have seen them run with only the hoses and the input flange holding it in place. Is that normal?

Crank driven vs block mounted raw water pump pros/cons

Thanks for the feedback guys! Seems like there are only a few drawbacks to the crank pump. I definitely like the idea of being able to go up a size if needed for extra cooling which I might need with my non standard setup... I also run in skinny water a lot so sand ingestion could definitely...

Crank driven vs block mounted raw water pump pros/cons

Hey all, I was looking to start a thread with some ppl chiming in about possible pros and cons of using a crank driven raw water pump vs engine block mounted pump driven by a belt on an old stern drive like my Mercruiser 302 V8. I'm building a whole different cooling system with heat exchanger...

    1986 18' Super Sport

Here ya go. Took a little to find it. Sorry for the cammo green on green background.. 😅 I can measure it if you think it'll help. Those angled outside edges were riveted right through the hull. The bottom flanges were on top of and riveted to the 1/2 plywood deck, the top had matching 1/2" ply...

    Bellows adhesive or not?

If you're worried about it leaking bc of somewhat conpromised surface and don't mind spending a few minutes years from now cleaning off a little sealant- then seal it up good! You'll probably feel better about it later when you're out there. I like the kind that sets vs slippery/greasy type...

    1986 18' Super Sport

I still have the original aluminum bulkhead structure from my Supersport that created the bow rider seating/platform. Guess I just couldn't let that fine looking structural piece go.. 😅 I actually drilled the rivets and removed it before the stricken hull went to the scrapper. If you want pics...

    1986 18' Super Sport

FWIW my Supersport 16 had flotation only under the floors. None under the bow seats (they were storage) or the cockpit seats (pedestal stbd and a back to back seat to port with batteries). I replaced it all myself when I had the floor out so knew it was back to 100%. I had the boat flooded one...

New Exhaust Manifold surface prep? 4.3 Mercruiser

Ford used to run iron to iron with no gasket on some engines exhaust manifolds believe it or not. Iron under pressure can be a great sealing surface that won't burn away when smoking hot unlike paint. I'd take that paint off with a flat file. My exhaust manifold directions actually rec to do...

Intake manifold quick test fit, everything seems to match up nicely. It's a Ford Bronco roller 302 that I will be marinizing for this project.

    1974 Chieftain 25 "Adventurer" Restoration

The ol small block is getting a little taller before installation thanks to the new "Edelwok" dual plane manifold that came in. She's going to be running coolant through her veins so went with a nice light aluminum manifold that will actually fit my 302 with factory heads and 4bbl Holley.

I've only ever had a Quadra jet on an old yard truck, but it always seemed to run! Well hopefully I can get the Holley going with slightly smaller jets or maybe it will run as is. Still quite a ways off from starting it so time will tell. How many CFM is the quad on your 4.3, happen to know...
