    Check/Fix/Replace Starter Motor 1996 50hp

Success! Read on this forum about lapping the crankshaft and flywheel. So I removed the flywheel, cleaned the surface of the ring magnet, took out the key, lapped the flywheel/crankshaft, replaced the key, then replaced the flywheel. This now sits about 2mm lower on the crankshaft. Result...

Looked at CDI troubleshooting guide, back to the boat with some ideas.

    Timing too advanced, Johnson 50hp 2-stroke 1996

This is a duplicated post from my previous thread. Summary; Johnson BJ50 BELEDS, difficulty in rotating the flywheel using a usual starting procedure. Advised to check my ignition timing and check the Woodruff key. Results of these checks; Woodruff key present and intact. Ring magnet surface was...

    Check/Fix/Replace Starter Motor 1996 50hp

Hello again. Been back top do some things advised in your replies. Flywheel off, checked for Woodruff key, it's in place and looks good. The ring magnet showed surface rust, so I lightly sanded it, a bit cleaner. Tested the ignition timing. It is well advanced. But, here's the odd thing...

    Check/Fix/Replace Starter Motor 1996 50hp

Thanks everybody. I arrived back from holiday, went to the boat with a better understanding of voltage drop testing. I have found a voltage drop of 1.5 V from the engine's ground back to the -ve battery post. My first job is to sort this out with new cable and connectors. More testing to follow.

Also, I must go back to check all the terminology, (terminal labels) on solenoids, I think I have got badly confused.

    Check/Fix/Replace Starter Motor 1996 50hp

I'll recheck things when I can, including voltage drops on starter circuitry, and ignition timing.

    Check/Fix/Replace Starter Motor 1996 50hp

I'll update you, although I've unwittingly left some things unanswered. Bench test on starter proves it is spinning, and a voltage drop here is about 1V. At the boat, the boat will crank (starter motor turns, engages flywheel, flywheel rotates) from the ignition switch when the key is turned to...

Thanks for your replies. I'll be back at the boat to do your advised tests a bit later.

    Check/Fix/Replace Starter Motor 1996 50hp

Before doing other things, I want to check the current draw when powering up the starter motor on the bench. I'm taking delivery of a clamp on ammeter tomorrow. Chris 1956 suggests the current draw should be less than 200 Amps. Does that value sound right for a bench test? I can post my findings...

    Check/Fix/Replace Starter Motor 1996 50hp

Thanks. It cranks when the spark is off (I wouldn't say well). Voltage drops about 3.5V. Cannot crank when circuit is set to spark. I'd like to test the spark timing, can I do this without cranking using the starter motor. Is it time to do electrical tests on the wiring, from ignition switch to...

    Check/Fix/Replace Starter Motor 1996 50hp

The continuity test showed that there is no continuity between the commutator and the frame of the starter. On bench testing, powering the starter up from a good battery, the starter motor spins, and I see a voltage drop of about 1v . On the boat, cranking the engine from the ignition switch...

    Check/Fix/Replace Starter Motor 1996 50hp

Cleaned up the inside of the starter motor. Put it back together using some thin strips of plastic to hold the brushes in place. Now for the important details. On the boat, I have 2 batteries. I hooked up the engine to the most conveniently placed battery. It's charged, but maybe not man enough...

    Check/Fix/Replace Starter Motor 1996 50hp

This is what I can give you. Engine is not new to me. Was running last summer on muffs. Found a serious hole in the boat's hull, so fixed that over the winter. Flywheel turns by hand. Compression has been good when previously checked, 150psi on each cylinder. Big voltage drop noted when +ve and...

    Check/Fix/Replace Starter Motor 1996 50hp

I was just about to wire up and attach my PTT unit as discussed, Johnson BJ50 BELEDS,when I decided to start my engine. No start. No crank, solenoid clicks. Someone noticed that the 9 spline cog on the starter motor was in the upper (engaged) position when I tried to start it. He thought it...

Thanks for the replies. There is no switch on the control lever. I'm thinking I'll have to add one somewhere.

trying to install a pre-owned PTT to a1996 Johnson 50

My manual tilt assist unit broke, and I found a second hand power tilt/trim unit online. My engine is a BJ50 BELEDS. The PTT is shown in the picture . Blue wire, green wire, black (earth wire). Is that classed as a 3 wire? Before I try to connect to the engine, how do I test the motor directly...

    Add a kill switch, Johnson 50hp, 1996.

Hi. I'm replacing my ignition switch with the MP39760 model. This doesn't seem to have an option to fit a kill switch lanyard.( I'll check with the supplier) I want to fit a switch on the dash. Can you tell me how to wire it up to the engine?

    1996 Johnson 50 Not starting

Good news at last. I have rotated the ring magnet, and now have the timing almost spot on. Engine fires up for a short time when injecting fuel directly. Now to replace my fuel lines and go from there. Word of warning, lining up the notch on the magnet to the factory mark on the flywheel does...
