    Sneezing from underneath flywheel

Luck was not in my favor today. The head gasket did look terrible. However, the issues go much further than that. I attached pictures of each cylinder. Of course 1 and 2 look fine, but cyl 3 is rough. Theres is significantly more play in piston 3 and it looks like somebody threw ball bearings...

    Sneezing from underneath flywheel

Thanks for the replies! I only had two screws in the air box for testing purposes. Unfortunately, the serial is no where to be found on the motor. It appears the tag was taken off when somebody repainted it. Not sure why I overlooked the simplest troubleshooting step and forgot to do a...

    Sneezing from underneath flywheel

Hey all, I recently acquired a boat with (allegedly) a 90hp Mercury Force. I cleaned the carbs thoroughly and got it running, had to adjust the throttle cam to get it idling. It will rev up just fine but sneeze a puff of smoke from beneath the flywheel which is very odd. I’ve heard of the “lean...

Whichever conclusion you would like to bring yourself to is fine by me. I can understand everything that’s been said and if not then I’ll ask questions.

You haven’t taken a guess that maybe the reason I’m still struggling is because no one has given any useful advice ? Haha, you’re a funny guy

No oil under flywheel. Here is the plugs. Probably about 2 hours on them.

Will do, but I don’t know why nobody is listening when I say it’s not a misfire. I did the bottom cylinder and no abnormalities with the timing light. It is NOT a misfire!!! Starting to think this forum is useless lol.

I’ve used a timing light. Am I looking for a missing flash? If that’s the case then there’s none. The light pattern was very consistent.

Yeah I just don’t have the manual to do so, and it’s not very hard to observe that the butterflies are opening and closing as they should.

Yes Yes and they are fully open at WOT, how do I check for an intermittent miss?

Yes I have ran a timing light and it’s perfectly in time. No I haven’t done a link and sync, but the cam roller is on the mark where it should be and the butterfly’s open as they should.

I just tested it with the muffs and yeah it actually does the same exact thing it does in the water.

Yeah you’re not wrong, but this is not a matter of misfiring. I’ve ruled out that out already by pulling the wires while it’s under load.

    I’m at a loss - Evinrude 40

No because it’s not under load, but I haven’t necessarily revved the motor up really high on muffs before.

Well I have locked 30 mph on gps with just me in the vessel, so it’s not bs at all.

I’ve got a charge coil on the way due to mixed results on resistance tests and the leaking insulation from the charge coil. We will see if that does anything.

I’m hearing you out when you say there’s nothing wrong with it, but it just doesn’t seem like a prop, weight, or balance issue. I put my friend in the front, moved battery and gas tank forward - nothing changed. Only thing left to change is the prop, but I don’t think it’s too much for this size...
