    1989 Chaparral Transom Repair

I feel like a traitor. All the work I put in to the old girl. The new bimini, all the fun she gave my family. My buddies son just got a Yamaha jet boat. When I saw it I lost my head. As much as I love the Chaparral I am not getting any younger and at 62 I'm kind of done working on the...

Mercruiser bogs only once or twice and then runs fine

If it starts fine at both cold and hot its probably not the choke itself but may be the choke pull off diaphragm is allowing the secondary air valve to open too quickly. Assuming its a 4 bbl carb. More information is helpful.

    Rochester Quadrajet Rebuild and Adjustments

So funny, I just did the same thing Chuck. Bought the book, read like a maniac. Did exactly the same rebuild as you. Put it back on the boat and primed the fuel bowl and it fired right up. Idled great and absolutely no hesitation on hard acceleration. I didn't touch a thing. Its a lot of...

    Carb Rebuild Kit

I second Cliff's. Just read Cliff's book on Quadrajet and then purchased a kit from him. He may be the only one actually modifying the choke pull off diaphragm to open the secondary air valve properly. Also if you have any questions Cliff answers his emails and forum questions daily. Super...

    Quadrajet fuel Pressure

Will this work for a Quadrajet? Says it will work for MerCarb and TBI but doesn't specifically say anything about a Quadrajet. Its the only thing I can find. I have a schrader type fuel pressure gauge.

    Clearing water from exhaust manifolds

A friend of mine just purchased a nice 2006 Ebtide deck boat with a Merc 5.0L MPI. The previous owner told him to start the boat for a few seconds after he pulls it out of the water to clear the exhaust manifolds. I have never done that even for a second for fear of damaging the impeller. I...

Engine and transom assembly removed, what should I look at while they are out.

1989 Chaparral 2100SX, 5.7L with Alpha 1 outdrive. I have a thread going in the hull restoration forum because I am rebuilding my transom. Great help over there! I have my engine out and transom assembly off. I have inspected my bellows, gimbal bearing, steering arm play, coupler wear. Are...

    1989 Chaparral Transom Repair

I had some water leaking in to my bilge last season and finally came to the conclusion I had to pull the transom assembly down to the hull and inspect for rotten wood. Sure enough I have some wet wood at the lower port side of the outdrive cut out. The wet wood is concentrated in the area I...

    Quicksilver Commander Controller Sticking

1989 Chaparral 2100 SX with 5.7L. Took the boat out for the first time this season and I was having trouble getting the shifter in to neutral. The shifter moved fine when the engine was not running. Nice and smooth forward and reverse both in gear and out of gear. But when the engine was...

Adjusting fuel pressure on a 5.7

1989 Chaparral 2100 SX, 5.7L with 4 bbl Rochester carb. I just replaced my fuel pump last summer and then had the local shop adjust the fuel pressure. I was at the lake and I could tell the new pump was delivering too much pressure. I got the boat back and they said they adjusted the pump to...

    Kawasaki JS 550 need advice

my son came home with a JS 550 he got for free. It has very little compression so we can only get it started by putting oil in the top to build a little compression. I don't know what year it is. I have taken the head off and the cylinder off the bottom end. The pistons connecting rods are...

Radio causing boat to not start

Kind of off topic I know, but you guys are the best so I'm hoping you have some ideas for me. After getting some work done on my old 89 Chaparral the boat has been running better then it ever has. I have been away from the boat for two weeks and I got her in the water a couple days ago and...

    Intermittant starting issue

1989 Chaparral, 5.7L merc with Thunderbolt ignition, 4bbl Rochester. I had my carb rebuilt last year and just had the carb adjusted again by my local mechanic at the lake. The boat runs great but I'm still having times where it takes a long time to start. Sometimes it will start with just a...

    1989 Chaparral 2100sx prop

    1) Performance issue you are trying to correct. most of the time the boat is used for wakebording, skiing or pulling tubes. 2) Current prop manufacturer, model, aluminum or stainless as a minimum. I run two props, both four blade aluminum 18 pitch and 16 pitch. Trying to get on plane quickly...

Please tell me my outdrive isn't toast

1989 Chaparral 2100SX, 5.7 Merc MCM with Alpha One, gen 1 outdrive. Two seasons ago I pulled my engine and replaced the engine coupling. I had a shop replace my bellows and the gimbal bearing. I just didn't want to do that job again, so I paid someone to do it. So last year when I did my...

    Carb questions, stalling issue

1989 Chaparral 2100SX, 5.7L merc with 4bbl rochester carb. Last year the boat started to hesitate on hard throttle. Sometimes it would cough and sputter and want to stall when trying to get on plane. Over the winter I sent the carb off to be rebuilt. I thought the accelerator pump was...

    Mercury Quicksilver Prop

There is a Quicksilver Prop number 48-72762 A5 17P, on my local Craigslist. I can't find much info on it. I'm wondering if it will work on my Alpha One outdrive with a 260hp v-8 engine. I have a 21' chaparral and I like to run a little low on the prop pitch so I can stay on plane at a little...

New engine coupler weekend is here

The weekend has finally arrived. I have a hoist I'm hoping is wide enough. If not I may have to remove my trailer fenders and tires. No big deal. I've prepped the boat. Only things left to remove are fuel line and power steering pump lines. Once I get the engine out what is next? Is the...
