    auxiliary water inlet. Johnson 50hp

2004 Johnson 50HP - 4stroke. The motor is installed high on the transom so that the anti cavitation plate is just above the surface at plaining speed. There is a water intake hole "auxiliary water inlet screen" on the underside of the cavitation plate. The manual says to change this out with P/N...

    Motor Height-Stepped Hull-Cavitation

The general rule of thumb that the capitation plate should be just under the transom doesn't seem to apply to my boat. I have a 17.5 ft Castello Marine, made in Finland. This is it here: www.sekkepipenorge.com/boat.jpg The hull is stepped at the motor end like this...

    86 -DT40 compression differance

Well.. with another summer upon us here in the cold north I just took my old 86 model DT40 out of hibernation. It doesn't have a huge amount of hours on it but I think it's dying of old age anyway. It starts ok but blows a lot of smoke when cold and it idles a bit rough with the occasion cough...

DT40 Not pumping water - Impeller ok...

Today I started my Suzuki DT40 (1986) after winter storage. It started fine but didn't pump water. At first I had the engine in a water barrel and then tried with the ear muff gizmo attached to the garden hose. It still wouldn't pump water and eventually the overheat buzzer sounded. I figured...

DT 65 won't run in forward gear

I'm looking a buying an 1987 DT65, which has some defects. The motor is way up in the north of the country so there is no way I can eyeball it before making a decision. It's priced real low and could be a good buy if easily fixable. Description from the seller. "The motor starts fine on land...

    Air Filters

Probably a dumb question.... but...Why don't Suzuki 2 strokes use air filters? When I did a recent carb stripdown and cleanup on my 85 DT40 I found a fair bit of dried salt in there. Without a filter it can also suck in any bits of crud, rust, dust that might find its way inside the engine...

    Idle Mixture DT40

Could someone tell the best way to adjust the idle mixture on a 1985 Suzuki DT40? The manual just says screw the idle mixture screw in all the way and then back it out between 1 1/4 and 1 5/8 turns. A bit vague eh? Does turning the screw clockwise richen the mixture? I found that at some point...

    Seized Head Cover bolts

I need to remove the cylinder head cover (not the head itself) on my Suzuki DT 40 to clean up the water passages and also need to check the thermostat. I only got as far as trying to loosen the first bolt on the thermostat cover. It's real tight and I'm pretty sure the bolt is going to shear...

    Suzuki DT40 peehole question.

Anyone with an older DT Suzuki who can answer this? I have just bought a 40hp from 1984 - 85 and I'm doing some repairs on it. Should there be a strong steam of water coming from small "peehole" on the side of the engine casing? On mine it just trickles out even though I have just replaced...

    2-stroke vs 4-stroke

2 stroke or 4? The pros and cons of both? I'm considering buying a new 40 - 60 hp outboard but not sure whether to go for 2 or 4 stroke. It will be on a 16ft fibreglass runabout, mostly used for day trips, a bit of fishing and a little water skiing with my kids. I'm sure this must have been...

    What do you say?

What do you say? I'm out on the fjords, fishing Mackerel. There is a strong runnout tide but my anchor is holding my boat fast. Another boat, much bigger than mine, anchors UPSTREAM from my and I notice that he drops his anchor and ties it off as soon as it hits bottom (about 40ft). His anchor...

    Bad Fuel Pump Symptoms? (DT40)

Hi all... new to the group and new to the Suzuki outbout motors. :^ I bought an 85 model, DT40 a while back and have slowly been resurrecting it from 3 years of storage. It's on a 16ft runabout. Gone right though everything that needed, or might need doing, (impeller, carb recondition, gear...
