New guy here & cant figure this ol’motor my 13yr old got from my dad. Motor sit for about 3yrs, so first thing we did was order impeller & carb kit. Installed those & got the motor running but I can’t figure out if the water pump is pumping water through the power head or not. I’m not sure where the water is supposed to be coming out & I can’t find anything to show me that. We put it in a barrel & in his boat & ran for about 5 minutes but I got worried the about the pump. So we took the power head back off & used a drill on the drive shaft with the lower unit in a bucket & it pump water but I want to make sure it working when we put it back together. Any help would be super appreciated!!!

Should be an obvious spray of water out of the exhaust relief hole about half way down the backside. You can't miss it if it is working.

Spray from that port will begin as soon as the motor starts. Tilt the side of the clamshell hood open or remove the hood. Let the motor idle in the barrel with water about half way up the leg, well above the pump. The top of the head should not be too hot to touch. If you have an infrared tester, you should see temps between roughly 120F and 140. Leave the hose running into the barrel both to keep the level up and to keep the water from heating up. You can run it in gear as long as throttle is limited to idle or high idle -- short bursts at higher throttle won't hurt as long as the cooling water isn't blown out of the barrel.

Hi there - new to the forum and just finding my way around. I’ve got the same vintage outboard. It’s been sitting for about 10 years. Ran briefly at the time and was tucked away after discovering the lower unit seemed to be leaking. I’m now on a mission to get it up and running for some QT fishing with my 11yo twin boys. Best part is they want to help get it running ... anything to get them off electronics. Read a different post on the checklist of items to look into but curious on the parts you noted as ordering - where from ? Do you have a manual ?? TIA

There is no water coming out of the any port on the leg. I removed the power head again & used a drill to turn the water pump. Water gets to the power head, but with the motor running it’s like it’s not flowing through the power head. After about 3 minutes of running you can’t touch the cylinder head it’s so hot. I’m thinking there’s something stopping the flow through the power head. Would I be correct in thinking this & how would I check flow through the power head??

The drill test is unreliable, but nevertheless it would seem likely there is a blockage. If you want to go into it, the first place to look is the exhaust cover plate on the side of the powerhead because that is where the water goes first. Cylinder head and out is the last place.

Before you tear into it though, do you have it deep enough in the barrel, or you trying to run it in a 5-gallon bucket? It does matter.

And don't run it till it gets hot. It should pump right away.
