Hello I purchased a 13’ Dell quay Dory that came with a 33hp super seahorse throw in motor. Supposedly the guys son had it running last year but you know how those stories go... not gonna act like I know a lot about motors because I definitely don’t. Just trying to see if it would be worth the time and money to fix it up to go along with the boat. Motor is a 67 33hp Super sea horse Rx 150

I am going to be blunt here.-----Some one with little experience has been working on it.-----It has suffered.-----A complete teardown and evaluation is in order before spending any coins !------Many better examples of that motor are available in my opinion.

I suppose "worth it" depends on do you want / need it. I'd say it has had a hard life, from the looks of it.

Well I’m gonna need some sort of motor for this boat. Whether it’s this one.... by the sounds of it, probably won’t be. Is this motor pretty much junk then? Or should I at least bring it somewhere to have it checked out?

And the guy that sold it to me was telling me that his son had that red wire in there rigged with a screw so there was ground going to somewhere as a process of him wanting to try it as a tiller motor. Supposedly it was running the boat last summer at a good 20mph

Was it P.T. Barnum that said "There's a sucker born every minute"? In other words, don't believe everything the guy said.

As for taking it somewhere to be checked out, well sure. Wanna take a bet on what they say?

Yep that’s why I said in my original post “you know how those stories go” just hoping to find life in a free motor I guess lol

The term----" free is too much "-------comes to mind on that motor.

I wouldn't haul to the dump quite yet. You could part some parts of it out. People trying to fix engines of that era are looking for parts motors.

Funky green with an Evinrude Blue gearcase

I have a 1962 Johnson 10hp that looked similar when I got it. I have a hard time junking anything, so I went ahead and refurbed the motor, and now it looks and runs like new. Don't ask me how much I have spent on the motor.

Agreed.-----I did a 63 Johnson for the grandson last winter.--------Don't ask how many hrs were spent.-----It was a very low hrs motor.----Still took it apart with every nut / bolt on the work bench.-----At 8 years old he starts it himself when it is warmed up.------But if you have to pay a shop for that kind of treatment , then forget it.------That is why post # 2 says to take it apart to evaluate a motor in that condition.

Thanks for all the replies. Gonna have it checked out by an old neighbor that’s a marine mechanic. Hopefully he’ll point me in the right direction of whether to craigslist it or keep it. Most likely gonna craigslist it as I’m looking to have a running motor on my boat by spring early summer.

OK. Since I am now in the market for a new motor what are some things I should look for when checking them out? As I mentioned before I’m no mechanic... but I don’t wanna get taken advantage of either from the seller.
I’ll probably be looking for a 9.9-25hp just for my 13’ Dell quay

General Condition. Ask when it was last run, and was it winteized. Compression Test. Loosen/remove the Drain Screw on the lower unit to check the gearcase for water. If there is a fuel tank, take a sniff of the contents. Test run it on muffs or in a barrel, just make sure to let all the water drain out, it is winter.

Given your stated horsepower requirements, may I offer my opinion on a couple of motors to avoid?

9.9 horsepower, 1974 through 1976. A host of problems with those, some that the mfr was unable to cure.

35 horsepower, 1976 through (?), with water inlets toward the forward edge of the gearcase. OK, this exceeds your stated desire for 25hp, but I mention it anyway. Lots of those things burned up in short order. Year? changed to plastic water inlet screens on sides of gearcase. Those are fine, and are good motors. I run a 1984 that I bought new and consider it one of the best motors I've ever owned. 35 years and still going, no repairs except a few impellers "just in case".

1980 was the year they moved the inlets to the side of the case on the 35
