Okay so I need y’all a help. I searched the forums and couldn’t find anything with my specific problem so here I am.

I inherited a 73 Johnson 9.5, and it has been sitting in a garage in south Mississippi for at least 20 years. It had oil oil in it, but not much, and everything was well sealed kept neat. Only issues were a few dry rotted plastic parts (kill switch button in particular).

i replaces the oil in the lower unit, and got a 45lb compression rating on each cylinder. I gave it some fresh gas and it fired right up within 3 pulls. I ran a about 2 gallons of gas through it and got it idling so i took it to the river.

it ran great for a few hours, started right up but wasn’t cooling properly so I took it home and immediately changed the impeller. Minimal pitting in the pump housing but there was a little bit of deterioration on the side where the pump tube goes up. It didn’t seem to effect performance so I ran it again.

Second trip out, I missed the dang gear shaft so I didn’t realize til I was on the water that I couldn’t get it in gear....rookie mistake, I know. After jiggling and fiddling with it I realized I wasn’t gonna fix this At the ramp, so I pulled it back to shore, I could still find reverse, just not forward.

Here’s the bad part, I’m taking it off the transom and my buddy drops it in the river. Fresh water, about 2-3 feet. Fully submerged for about 5 seconds. I pulled it up drained it out and put in the truck. It was easily 3 hours before I got back home. I pulled the plugs, drained all the water I could find and it sat overnight. Next day, the flywheel is getting harder and harder to turn with each pull until it finally seized and won’t budge at all.

Ive tried PB blaster, for two days, nothing. I’ve gone through about a pint of MarvelMystery over a few days and now the flywheel will rock about 1/6” but that’s it. At least I can rock it. Problem I have now is that when I turned it backup to dump the PB blaster it all dripped out of a tiny hole over the water pump housing. Bottom side of the fins. And now when I put the Marvel in holds in cylinder 1 with no receding in 2 days, but cylinder 2 it just leaks out onto the bench as I pour it in. Cracked head? I’m stuck here now.

sorry for the long post, and I’m sure I did plenty of stupid things but I’m an amateur and I’ll admit It, so any advice on how to save the little engine would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,
have a great day.

My manuals state to get as much water out of it and started as soon as it comes out of the water.. It might be too late.

??----It leaks out because exhaust ports are open..----Remove lower unit and see if motor will turn.

Is it still in gear?

I agree with a port being open as to the juice running all over, but nothing you describe should have broken internals nor do I think it sitting after being dunked will hurt it much if at all.

RaisedByWolves-----No " in gear " lock out on that motor.-------When a 2 stroke motor is recovered from a dunking the corrosion starts immediately.------Manuals clearly state that motor must be started or dealt with immediately ( 6 hours in some manuals ) -----I have seen the damage first hand on bearings 24 hrs after recovery.-----And some manuals also state to RESUBMERGE the motor in fresh water to preserve it until it can be dealt with by a shop.

open up the cyl head try to loosen the pistons with a large wood peg and a hammer keep oiling it

see if it looses up. if yes.. reassemble and run it oil rich 25/1 clean up the points !!

you don't have much choice anyway ….

good luck tell us how it ended ...

It only takes a couple hours for cyl walls and rings to rust and lock up. Putting a large wrench on the flywheel crank nut and rocking easily back and forth will get you best results for breaking it free. That will also break rings if you force it. There's a point where nothing will work. Rocking with a wrench worked after pulling heads and hitting with a wood block didn't (on an omc 4hp) that got wet. Good luck.
