For some reason when my engine sits for more than 3 days, it becomes very difficult to start. Once it does start, it releases alot of smoke, then starts like a champ every time for any time interval within 2 or so days. I have no idea why it does this. Also, I make sure that I have the Primer bulb rock solid every time.

Check valve in VRO pump, unvented oil tank. Some on board said to push paper clip thru cap seal in oil tank.

The oil tank may not be vented. Summer heat will cause pressure in tank to push oil into the carbs . Pushing the paper clip thru the oil tank seal/gasket will vent the tank. If this does not solve the problem, you will have to replace the VRO pump. Later model pumps suppose to have inproved check valve.

I think it is a bit premature to blame the OMS Pump. After 3 days the gasoline in the carbs has evaporated, leaving the oil behind. Some smoking is expected. Also, these motors can flood if you choke them too much, making them hard to start.

Where is the check valve located, and is it possible to replace it with the updated design? Or is it just the nature of the beast for this engine?

Clanton, My '98 Johnny 150HP has the OMS System. It would be very surprizing if they reverted back to the obsolete VRO or VRO2 system in a newer motor than mine.

You sure about the rest of your facts? A bit of troubleshooting might help this guy, before recommending he replace a $500 OMS Pump.

Bonz, An air leak in the gasoline side of the fuel system will cause more oil to be mixed in. How does the motor run (much smoke?) after it is warm and you are cruising for a while?

It runs awesome, and any subsequent starts within 2 or so days are perfect.

OK, remember that when you prime that motor, you are not forcing any fuel into the carbs. The gas that you are using to prime is being stopped at the vapor seperator. As you crank the engine, new fuel is being mixed and pumped to the carbs. Initially, the carbs still have whatever is left from the last usage, less evaporation.

You may need to put up with some initial smoke. Are you using the primer, when cold starting? Maybe it has a leak or something?

That makes perfect sense that the fuel is evaporating from the carb bowls, its hot as hell outside recently, and I also found the vent hole on the Oil tank to be clogged as well. I cleaned that out and made sure it was clear of all obstructions.

If it continues the same, I guess itll just be the nature of the beast.
