'01 90hp Yamaha, "O" ring

Just changed my first water pump. Where the boat was parked was an area where other work has been done over the years. When I finished installing the impeller, I walked a few feet away ( where I had carried the lower unit when I took it off ) and saw an "O" ring on the ground. It's about 3/4" I.D. and I cannot find anyplace where this may have come from on the lower unit. Could this have just been on the ground when I started? Does it go on the drive shaft? Any help appreciated.

only orings I remember in the kit are bigger than that. the one in the kit goes around the upper bearing housing and is rarely used unless you removed the bearing housing.

Thanks rodbolt. I couldnt remember if there was a groove for it just below the splines at the top of the driveshaft.
