Hey guys,

I have an 01 90hp yamaha outboard. I took it out on the water and it runs fine on idle, but once i punch it, it only goes up to 2200 rpm, and then just sits there. I got home and did some trouble shooting and it was idling and rev'ing up normal while out of the water, and compression was good on all 3 cylinders. What do you think the problem could be? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Out of the water, there is no load on the motor. You could have one cylinder not hitting. if you put the boat back in the water, start the motor. I want you to pull one spark plug wire and see if there is a change in the way the motor runs, if there is a change put that wire back on and go to the next one. When you get to the cylinder that has no change, that cylinder is your problem. when you pull the plug wires you need to hear the spark popping when the plug wire is close to the plug. If you dont then your cdi unit is bad. If you do then you need to spray a little bit of starting fluid into your cylinders and see if you hear a difference in the way the motor runs, If the motor runs great then take your carbs apart and soak them in Johnson and Evinrude Engine Tuner for a few hours. Then spray them out with startin fluid. put them back together and go have a good day fishin!!.I'm 5 star certified with Yamaha it will fix your prob.
