01' yamaha 70tlrz trim/tilt prob

was out on boat fishing in shallows when my buddy trimmed the motor all the way up and when we were ready to leave it would not go back down. The trim motor is running but nothing happened. only had a pair of pliars and had to loosen lower pressure line to bleed off main cylinder to get motor back in water. Now I have tried checking the fluid levels and topped off but still no results. Trim motor is still working but it will not go up or down. Any help would be great. Thanks M.M.

first check the manual release hasnt come loose. look for it on the side of the transom bracket.<br />i would pull the motor and check the drive. if that was ok dig a little deeper. the holes connecting the pump and the rams are small and sometimes filtered, it doesnt take much to block these holes. the disassembly is fairly easy with the engine removed from the transom, be careful pulling the pump there are small parts. a yamaha service manual will make it clearer.

M.M<br /><br />There is usually a left hand thread release screw on the motor (not sure on this model exactly). When you release this the motor should lower. At its lowest point it should go up and down with the motor.<br /><br />I had the same problem with my motor (it is common due to low fluid). Once lowered top up the fluid and up/down it a few times and check fluid again. It should be fine after this process. Mine has gone 3 years since no problem.<br /><br />Ian

Thanks for your input on my problem. I will definitely try what you have suggested. I just want to make sure that I'm understanding but the bypass screw on the side of the trim assembly is the key to bleeding off the air while filling the fluid and working the trim up and down? Should I be looking for a multitude of small parts to become unalligned ar disassembled as I remove the trim/tilt pump?

the manual release wont help bleeding air. the pumps are self bleeding through their own operation. the only thing that may become misaligned when you remove the motor is the pump drive, easy to realign. be sure to have your manual handy when you attempt this job and a very clean work surface. mark the orientation of the major components as you remove them.
