Hi all,

Just found this forum and think it's awesome! Don S... YOU DA MAN!

I have a 2002 or 2003 (cant remember of the top of my head) Bayliner Capri 185 with a 3.0 135 hp engine.

When I start my boat I get clicking and I just read over the troubleshooting procedure written by Don to see if I'm having an issue with my solenoid or starter and will perform the tests tomorrow with a meter as I don't have a test light.

Anyway, if my starter happens to be bad, how hard is it to change out? I'm fairly competent in removing and replacing anything as long as I have directions and directions with pictures make it even better, lol.

I quickly looked at the starter/solenoid assy today to see how it comes apart and it doesn't look complicated but sometimes looks can be deceiving. I did some searching on the threads but didn't find any DIY removals for this type of engine. Can anyone point me in the correct direction?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Re: 02-03 merc 3.0 starter replacement info

Well I followed the troubleshooting guide and it worked out great. I used a meter instead of a test light. The slave solenoid was bad bad. The problem I have now... The orig solenoid screws are stuck in the bracket, I cant see behind the bracket to see if there are nuts attached or if the bracket is threaded and the screws are stripped. I'm guessing that there is a nut because I would think that Merc and/or dealer wouldn't put together an engine with stripped parts. Maybe I'm wrong? For now the new solenoid is hanging free by the wires and I have it taped with electrical tape and in a ziploc bag till I get around to taking the bracket off.
