This might be the first of lotsa Mercury questions....never had one before...... looks like there's a little 90deg. fitting screwed into the front of the lower unit of this motor I recently bought. it's about midway between the power head and gearcase and has a piece of rubber tubing stuck on a barbed nipple. the tubing makes a little loop up and then back down and has a little plastic fitting stuck in the other end. I asked a Merc. mehanic and he said it was a speedometer pick-up-------looks too high on the lower unit to me---wouldn't be in the water when the boat was planing. seems like the fast talkin' guy that sold me the boat said something about a cooling modification----hope this is a good thing. I had surgery recently and haven't run the boat yet....... motor seems to run, cool and shift on the trailer. thanks in advance, HOJO, central Fl.

Yep, it's speedometer hose and fitting. There are passages in the lower unit that connect inside the lower unit and drive shaft housing

Items 9,10 and 11 in this pic.

Thanks Don, glad it's not something bad patched up. Boat, motor & trailer look like they've had a rough life so far. I need to find a deal on a manual on ebay.

Hi,
I've own mercurys for years so I can tell you a little. That speedometer
hole is in the gear case or above it and if you hit a log you will plug it with wood an your speedometer quits. you then have to take a drill bit or something and clean it out. Not a big deal. I hit stuff in canada occassionaly and had to do the drill.
I had a merc 150 on a Lund and the speedometer was a unit on the starboard side of the transom. When I reached speeds of 55 mph or so the unit flipped up and I had no spdmr. So I took it off and hooked it to the motor and fixed that , but then the wood thing. Still a better deal.
I think you will like mercs after you have owned them awhile. Hope you don't get a lemon for the first one......................Jerry
