I have a 2003 75hp mercury 4stroke with approx 100hrs on it. Last weekend I was at roughly half throttle and the block pretty much exploded. If you were standing in the boat, the hole wraps from one side of the block about 1.5 inches tall around the motor to half way up the other side (completely destroyed). Has anyone heard anything like this before, warranty is long gone therefore I am wondering if anyone has experience in talking to mercury about motor defects? Do you think they can do anything for me? If you could see this engine it looks like its still on the showroom floor, this shouldn?t of happened, especially to a 4 stroke.

Even the best designed engines have occasional (or rare) failures. Sounds like you had a con rod disconnect from a piston.

Maybe Dr. Mallard or Abby could figure out why, but after 7 years I think it is not likely to be a design defect or flaw in manufacture.

I would get the best I could for parts and replace either the powerhead or the whole outboard.

Thanks JB, so far in talking to my local Mercury dealer and friends they tell me to get what I can and get a new one. Just a hard pill to swallow when considering the great condition of my motor.
