I have a 2003 2 stroke Johnson 150. I bought this motor (and boat) about 2 months ago. First few times I ran it I'd hit the key and it would fire right up. Now, when I turn the key it will crank for about a second and then sounds like the starter lets go and you can hear it spin until you let the key go. It will do this several times before engine gets going. Is there a simple solution to this problem or should I take it to the shop? It's still under warranty, but about an hour drive to the shop.

check battery connection,if you have wing nuts on battery, replace them with nylock nuts & star washers for a better connection.

Might be a faulty starter motor pinion gear. I've had a case where the rubber bushing inside the pinion gear lets go under load meaning that the starter motors turns and the pinion is engaged but it doesn't turn over the motor. Once it starts slipping it gets worse.
