Not off to a good start. Boat went in the water and whenever it went from idle to fwd/rev it would stall, unless I gave it a lot of throttle - emptied what little fuel there was and filled up with a new tank, ran 60 minutes to home port behaving the same way.
Now, it won't even warm up. Runs for about 45-60 seconds, regardless of how high it's throttled, and quits. I can restart it right away, but it will die again.
I've replaced all the plugs, the distributor cap(it was worn), rotor, checked the batteries, put a new water separating fuel filter in, jumped out the oil pres. switch, but no change.

FWIW, the entire lower unit was replaced last year because we hit an unmarked submerged object. Boy, those stainless steel props sure do transmit all that energy right into the lower unit gears....

Anyway, HELP! I've been waiting all winter to go boating!

Thanks

You May Possibly have more than 1 Issue,.. But, By your 2nd sentence I see a Lower Shift Cable that's Sticking,.. Severely........

Now, Your second Paragraph Doesn't sound like a Cable,.. At All....

I'd start with the Ignition,... Where does the Power Stop, When the motor dies ??? Is there Power to the (+) side on the Coil ????

Is this a Carbed or EFI motor ???

I'd agree that it is more than one issue. I've kinda figured that from the start..

Where do I check this stuff on the ignition? What do you mean by power stop? And coil? In the ignition switch?

It's carbed.

Thanks,

I checked up to the distro cap. 10v there when ignition is in run position.
By interrrupt switch you mean the lanyard kill switch or the shift ignition interrupt for when you go into gear?

Before we guess about everything under the sun, how about some information.
Is the engine EFI or Carbed
Do you have Alpha or Bravo drive
Have you done any preventive maintenance yet. Tuneups, fuel filter changes etc?

It is a Bravo3, ThunderboltIV ignition, carbed, and I replaced the fuel filter, oil, oil filter, plugs, distro cap, rotor. The engine has 200 hours on it.
Last season the entire lower was changed out - it has not been run since then - it was winterized, and now I have all these problems.
When I start it, it sounds just fine, runs smooth for about 45-60 seconds, then you can see(and hear) the tach start to drop off below 700rpm, I can gun it and get it back up to 1000-3000rpm. If it is below 2000rpm, it will stall out, it if is above 2000rpm it starts to run away, and so I have to back off the throttle, and it stalls out.

Now it Sounds like it's Starving for Fuel.......

Could be Plugged Fuel Filters.......

Could be a Plugged Idle Circuit in the Carb......

Could be the Fuel Pump........

Could be the Line from the Tank,.. or the tank pickup........

I'd start at the top of My list,+ work down......

Pulled out the carb, took it apart and cleaned it. THere wasn't a lot of gunk in there, however now it works fine. Idles smoothly at 600 even...

Thanks all!
