Can anyone here tell me how to disconnect the shift shaft on a 05' Honda 20hp, 4-stroke? Is there anything special I need to know about removing the lower unit? Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

Re: 05' Honda 20hp Shift Linkage

The shift shaft is easily disconnect by backing off the jam nut that is located just below the lower bracket bushing area that supports the motor where it pivots and above the 2nd cavitation plate. Look at that area while shifting the lever back and forth to locate the shift rod. Use 2-10mm open end wrenches to unlock the jam nut, probably will have to shift to reverse to get access to shift linkage nut and jam nut. Once, the jam nut is loosened, back off the longer top connecting nut until the shift rod disengages the lower threads. Prior to removal measure setting distance so to not change adjustment setting if shifting is okay now. There will be 5 bolts total to remove, 2ea. on either side and one on center-line in the back over the prop. Hope this helps.....
