I was just ou for a short ride a few days ago, as I approached our lift the engine seemed like it popped out of gear. I tried to go back to neutral and reengage the gearbox. The control would let me do that, but the motor only made a metallic sounding klunking noise and would not rev up at all. To my knowledge, I did not hit anything or drag on the bottom. What could this be? What happens if the prop does get jamed and breaks the plastic piece in the prop? Thew motor started and ran just fine up to that point. Can the cables from the control get messed up or slip some how causing this? Any comments are welcome.

When you say "would not rev up at all" does the engine speed increase without any forward motion, or you push the throttle and the engine speed does not increase, but the prop turns?

If its the first, check for a spun prop. The hub could've given way. Scribe a mark across the prop and hub, run the motor in the water for a bit, then see if the marks no longer line up. That would indicate a spun prop. Your solution here will be to either have the prop re-hubbed or get a new prop. The cost may be a wash depending on the availability of a prop shop in your area.

If its the second, check your throttle cable. It may be giving you enough motion to get the motor in forward gear, but not enough to advance the throttle. What happens mechanically at the engine when you push the throttle forward? Does the throttle advance i.e. does the timing ring move, carbs open up etc? If it does not, that would indicate a broken throttle cable.
