Ok heres the deal Im confused on......Well not really

Back in the day (1997) My Webcraft had a 3.0 Mercruser with alpha stern drive. I used to do all my own maintnance and got pretty good with pulling the stern drive and greesing the shaft and all that, and by far that was the hardest thing. I even installed the new trim senders since they were dead when I 1st bought the boat!

My quesiton is back then I used to fill the sterndrive ( lower unit ) with 80 weight gear oil as per the manual back then. There was NO DRIVE OIL MONITOR on that engine.

I now own a brand new 07 BAYLINER 185 w/ Merc 190 Hp 4.3 V6. I dig the fact the sterndrive oil is monitored and you can add oil if and when it gets low, hell you can actually see it in this system. The thing is, is it 80 weight gear oil? I dont think so. It is PREMIUM GEAR LUB as I bought a quart of QUICKSILVER gear lube ( stern drive oil ) wich the part # on the quart wasnt the same as my manual, but it was the blueish, aqua green color so it was definetly the right stuff. I only needed to add like 2 Oz.

It seems like a light weight oil and my question is, am I right? or is it a heavy gear oil and Im just not used to it since its been over 10 years since I changed lower unit oil.

Or is this completly differant and new technology if you will. 14 bucks a quart Vs 8 bucks for gear oil thank God it says the system is only 1 qt to fill.

Just woundering. I wont use anything but the quiksilver premium stuff since the boat is brand new......is there a synthetic gear oil that may be better :)?

Re: 07 MERCRUSER DRIVE OIL MONITOR / oil type

Merc uses the Premium gear lube in the NEW drives for the breakin period. After that, they recommend the Hi Performance synthetic gear lube - Look at your owners manual.

PS: If it's low, you may have a leak, contact your dealer and have it checked.

It wasnt really low just 1/2" below the OPERATING RANG line on the bottle. I barely poured in 2 Oz and its right on the line now. I wouldnt call that a leak at all.

Im goning to look at the manual again I was lookign at it last night and I didnt see anything in there about usign differant gear lube after the break in, but Ill look again.

Cool There is synthetic gear lube, then thats whats definetly GOING in the lower unit then!

Thanks Don
