I have an 08 DF 90 that I am having some issues with shifting.
I was starting my motor maintenance this weekend and figured I would start with the oil. So I hooked up the muffs and started her up to get her warm for the oil change. As the motor was running in neutral I noticed the prop was spinning. I could easily stop it with my hand but as soon as I let go it continued to spin. I hopped in the boat thinking it wasn't in neutral all the but it was. I kicked her up in gear and it made a grinding noise that did not sound good. It did the same thing when dropping it in to reverse. Not sure if it something that it is just doing it cause it was on the muffs or not but please help. Do I need to adjust the shift linkage and if so how do I do it?

thats normal for prop to spin when running, the fact you can stop it by hand means that its not being drive by gears, you would be able to stop it. first check lower unit for oil, gear oil. that drop your lower unit into a 55 gallon drum filled with water. you will get a clunk but it shouldn't grind when but into gear. if still grinding something is wrong in lower unit, drain lower unit oil save it, but look for metal in it. if it twinkles its metal. It will need attention

Thanks for your help! I was told that some times the prop spins when on muffs do to the gearoil moving. I t scared me when i put her in gear and heard the grinding. I guess that the grinding happened because the prop gear was spinning and didn't allow the gears to mesh properly. I will put it in and see what happens after i change the lower unit gear oil. Thanks again!

Doesn't sound like you have a shifting problem. The gears are always in mesh and when you shift, you are engaging the clutch dogs for forward or reverse. When you put it in gear, don't try to "baby it" in, just go ahead and throw it in gear so it "clunks" rather than "grinds". Prop can spin in neutral due to high viscosity of lower end oil, gives it a "hydraulic" coupling effect, again, no problem. Good Luck!

10-4 on the "snapping" the shifter into gear. Sliding the lever forward or into reverse causes the clutch dogs to do the same thing rounding off the edges. Keep doing that and it will eventually begin popping out of gear. Don't make problems were there aren't any.
