I bought my boat with maybe 10 hrs it was a dealer demo. I have had this weird fuel problem since maybe 50 hrs.
I fish shallow water alot so when I get onsite I trim up so that the anticavitation plate is just out of the water (not trimmed up all the way) so I can drift and troll the flats. After fishin for half hour hour whatever I figured out the ball looses prime. I found out because when I start it up and find a deep hole to punch it out of within 30 seconds it falls on its face. I can restart it but it usually runs crappy for a little bit and finally clears up. I notice the ball has no fuel in the line though. The ball doesnt ever go flat. If I prime it before I take off everything is fine. There are no hard cold starts, I prime it on first start and it fires up in 3 cranks. I had thought it was the water separator filter so I had changed the filter and it seemed fine for maybe 10 hours and seemed to doit again. I have changed the ball out to a mercury and now a new yamaha. Changed the fuel filter on the engine. I also took out the antisiphon valve and pulled the fuel pickup tube out to see if the filter on the end was clogged and it was fine. I put hose clamps on the fuel water separator lines in the bilge ect. A few times after changing a water separator filter I couldnt get it reprimed at all. I would have to pull the engine side of the bulb off and hold it up and down and prime it and sometimes that would take awhile too and id have to put my finger on the end going to the engine and would finally prime. Sometimes the bulb primes in 2-3 pumps like normal too.
The weird part about this is everything else is fine, it doesnt loose rpm or run funny or loose power or anything. I do notice after 30-50 hours it will idle funny though and its time to change the separator filter. One thing I always think about though is I dont keep a full tank ever. its usually around 1/2 tank before I go out but sometime 1/3 or 1/4. Its usually stored with 1/4 tank and I add stabil. Since Ive owned the boat it has never been stored for more than 2 weeks without run. Its is stored indoors in an air conditioned garage too. Once and awhile its outside in the rain over the weekend but spend 90% or its life in the ac.
Like I said before the only thing I can say is that it seems like its ok for a short amount of time after I change the water separator but I havent been checking the ball before each start until recently. usually i just turn the key and she fires right up. I know the anti siphon helps keep prime but ever since i took it out i havent had as much trouble so i sorta forgot about it until yesterday when it seemed to be acting up. my pickup is on the frontof the tank, its a clear hose which seems to be a slide on hose barb with no clamp. i guess the hose slides to the back of the tank when gettin on plane and back forward when getting off?
Am i doing something wrong? It seems to only do this when I trim up but yesterday it didnt matter but it was also time to change the separator filter so i guess i will see next week.
I am worried for a few things about this. One is the abilities of the local repair people on this intermittent problem and paying an alot of money only to be left with an intermittent problem. I am very capable mechanically but I dont really have much experience with outboards.
Ive read alot of forums and read about replacing pumps, cleaning injectors, replacing filters, cleaning the VTC (something like that in the intake) ect.
It has always had ethanol fuel in it and I treat it with marine stabil and a tad of ringfree every tank.
thanks for any input in advance.
