Re: 0mc king cobra,set up
Have a 460 king cobra i/o on a 1989 bayliner 2855 sierra sunbridge boat never seemed to get out of its own way.
Howdy, and welcome to iboats!
I might have considered keeping the engine and drive in my boat until I sold my flywheel housing to a guy in SOCAL. He had a 460 King Cobra in his 2855 Bayliner too. On the way out and back from Catalina island one day, he had his coupler literally explode in a catastrophic failure.
It COMPLETELY destroyed his flywheel housing (which is unique to the 460) and damaged the inner transom plate(which is fairly generic)
Until he found me (with a used one) he was ready to "total" the boat because the insurance company said it wasn't worth buying a new engine/drive (Merc/Volvo) and they couldn't find the spare parts to fix it.
Mine by the way was pretty wimpy on power. I tried everything .........compression was good, timing was good etc......
I finally discovered that my camshaft had some flat lobes. When I found out (then) that couldn't buy couplers or manifolds, I pulled the whole thing and installed the Mercruiser/Bravo III setup. (Couplers and manifolds are now available ....albeit for almost DOUBLE what they cost for Merc/Volvos)
You could install a Volvo engine/DPS too if you can find one.
Grab whatever you can find and get the newest one you can get too....
I sold all my complete King Cobra setup piece by piece for about $3500 over a 2 year period on craigslist, ebay etc......
Good luck!
