Have a 460 king cobra i/o on a 1989 bayliner 2855 sierra sunbridge boat never seemed to get out of its own way.Always maintained. Is there another outdrive that will fit the transome assembly besides omc. It seems like everyone i talk to has had problems with this set up. Any ideas?

Which King Cobra do you have? The cone clutch KC or dog clutch KC. Yeah, OMC liked the name King Cobra.

Ayuh,... Unfortunately, the only real cure for yer problem is swapping it out with a Merc or Volvo power, from the Pulleys to the Prop....

Not if he has a dog clutch Cobra. Now that couplers , manifolds and risers are available, the drives can be changed.
I converted a couple of them over years ago, here is how the first one went.

Howdy, and welcome to iboats!

I might have considered keeping the engine and drive in my boat until I sold my flywheel housing to a guy in SOCAL. He had a 460 King Cobra in his 2855 Bayliner too. On the way out and back from Catalina island one day, he had his coupler literally explode in a catastrophic failure.

It COMPLETELY destroyed his flywheel housing (which is unique to the 460) and damaged the inner transom plate(which is fairly generic)

Until he found me (with a used one) he was ready to "total" the boat because the insurance company said it wasn't worth buying a new engine/drive (Merc/Volvo) and they couldn't find the spare parts to fix it.

Mine by the way was pretty wimpy on power. I tried everything .........compression was good, timing was good etc......

I finally discovered that my camshaft had some flat lobes. When I found out (then) that couldn't buy couplers or manifolds, I pulled the whole thing and installed the Mercruiser/Bravo III setup. (Couplers and manifolds are now available ....albeit for almost DOUBLE what they cost for Merc/Volvos)

You could install a Volvo engine/DPS too if you can find one.

Grab whatever you can find and get the newest one you can get too....

I sold all my complete King Cobra setup piece by piece for about $3500 over a 2 year period on craigslist, ebay etc......

Good luck!
