Good day,

After a few years, today I dug out a motor my dad gave me when he was downsizing. This motor has a value to me as he won it as a door prize during a hockey game I was in as a kid.

So, the gas tank is toast, I rigged up a lawnmower tank to fit while I track down a tank.

After a few hours I got the baby running pretty good. My problem is the low idle needle has no friction to stay at a setting and tends to fall out. The high idle needle is not as bad but I need to toughen it it.

Any ideas on a solution and tank if available?

There should be a brass hex nut around each needle--the packing nuts. Behind the packing nuts are the packings, two on each needle. Tightening the packing nut mashes the packings and seals & tightens the needle.

So, try tightening the nut first. That may be all you have to do. But if tightening the nut doesn't get it, you will need to replace the packings. They are part number 307583 and are available from any Johnson or Evinrude dealer, or right here at iboats under part number 18-7106.

The tank might be a mite tougher. It is part number 383689 (279097 for the same tank with Evinrude color and decals), but is listed as no longer available. There probably are other part numbers for different years. Try www.sea-way.com. Or go to www.aomci.org and place a free want ad on their Webvertize pages.
