I've been doing alot of reading and am down to deciding what type of cloth to use for the transom and stringer job. I am going with the 435 poly resin from us composties. My question is can i use a 1.5 oz csm product for between transom layers and on stringer than finish it out with mat? I have braced hull removed can and am gonna start cutting out inside wall of transom tommorrow hoping to order glass tommorrow and cut and install new transom this weekend

You should tab your transom and stringers in with the 1.5 CSM, or 1708 biax...either will work...1708 is stronger as a structural material but the CSM is quick and easy to tab with and will hold your transom and stringers firmly into place, then you can cover them with roving or layers of 1708 biax. I wouldnt use cloth for adding structural pieces like transom and stringers. Biax and roving seem to be the correct material for those applications. Cloth would be good to finish your deck with because it usually wets out pretty smooth and even and will allow for a good finish for painting or using a non skid deck covering like kiwi grip or durabak.

Also CSM should be fine between the layers of your transom. When i do mine i am going with a layer of 1708 with csm on wither side making contact with the 2 sheets of wood. I am doing this mostly for the thickness as the wood i have is a hair shy of what i need in thickness when the 2 sheets are put together.

This is how i understand what i have learned anyways...

Have fun and GL

I'm guessing from what you ask you want to do this cheaply.

1.5oz csm is fine and needed with poly resin. For strength you also need woven roving. Alternate layers of mat and roving - this is the old time fiberglass layup schedule.

Remember you need mat first whenever you're attaching to wood or existing glass, so that's your first layer. I'd say for the transom and stringers both to use 2-3 layers of paired mat and woven roving.

So eg. for your transom use the following: mat-roving-mat-roving-mat-roving. Overlap each layer farther up the hull sides than the last by about 3-6 inches.

For the roving get about 18 oz. It may actually be cheaper to use 1708 cloth (which is a stitched combination of cloth and mat) depending on where you get it. If you get 1708 just use three layers of that.

Good luck,
Erik
