I would like to thank you all for responding to my first question. My motor is old and the chrome is half off other 5 cylinders and was still running good until water pump problem.I cant afford to rebuild it right so im trying to limp along for another 100 hours or so. I know i have to re sleeve cylinder due to chrome being gone from cylinder,my question is why cant i use cylinder with chrome gone its steel and i can change rings to none chrome ones.Im dumb on cylinders so please forgive me,a/c 's my feild.

I say its OK just run a bit more oil, and don't EVER use synthetic oil!!! never use it, it won't stick like normal !!!

G'day. I believe that there are companies in the US that will rechrome these cylinders. There may be firms in Europe that can do it too, I don't know how successfull they are.<br />For sloopy. A 1989 200HP motor has 6 Cyls, that is all the fingers on one hand and one finger from the other

Sloopy,<br />Why are you saying not to use synthetic oil????<br />I run Amsoil, and as you can see in my other topics I am facing a rebuild as we speak. I have had no problems with the oil for 2 or 3 years that I have run it, and have also run it in the snowmobiles that I have. Can you document that synthetic is bad??

Ryan, not sure what size block you have but I have (2) merc V6 blocks (2.4L) with chrome cylinders. They are from 175HP Mariners-1985 models, could supply you with engine serial #'s if you are interested. email me at grandx@peoplepc.com if interested.

Re: 1 more chrome cylinder question

Some times stuff just to far gone... Man if you are looking at bad chrome in several cylinders you might start thinking about going another way.<br />There is a place that re-chromes blocks for around $900 for all six holes... "if that becomes an option email me and I'll look it up for ya"<br />I get mine re-sleved for $175 a hole "you ain't going to find it much cheaper" .. thats $1050 for a hole block... I realy would never consider one that needed more than 2 in one pop.. Think about finding a good used one... any 2.4 block will work... the 1982 and newer ones are finger ported and will perform better... You might also try to find a 1991 or newer 2.5 block.. they have steel sleeves and a lot beter port configuration.. all your parts will inter change except the pistons and the crank main bearings... If you do decide to try to get buy with what you have don't replace the rings on the none effected cylinders.. DO NOT EVER NEVER.. put chrome rings in one of the chrome clyniders..... Good luck...<br />
